Lovely old refurbished colonial building set in beautiful gardens, rich with stories of Robert Louis Stevenson's shortish stay here. Not sure he deserved the enormous reverence with which he is remembered by the locals, but that's another story. It's definately well worth a visit and was great to have such an informative and delightful guide. And her beautiful voice brought tears to my eyes as she sang Stevenson's epitaph "....home is the sailor home from the sea....".

If you want to walk to his gravesite up the hill, just make sure you have good walking shoes and choose the coolest time of the day.

Excellent guide who told us so much of the family.
You need a good hour plus just for the tour.
The home and gardens are beautiful.
Good selection in the gift shop.

Only disappointment was I didn't get to see where Robert was buried on the hill which takes 50 minutes plus to reach.

The story of Stevenson and Samoa is so romantic and gentlemanly. Even the story of the building itself is highly interesting . The guides all know their history and the mansion is chock full of interesting items each with its tale.
The walk up to the grave is worth it if you enjoy great views as you can see most of Apia and the coast west and east. It took us about an hour and a half up (70 and my spouse with a broken arm in a cast). and an hour down. Make sure to hear the story of his burial before you go and imagine as you walk hacking your way through virgin jungle at night .
