I was based from the Outrigger for my one month stay in samoa while working in the hospital down the road. It was a great place to meet other medical students - there was about 15 of us there at the one time.
Rooms
The rooms downstairs (air conditioned, ensuites) are horrible. Like cells, very dingy, noisy aircon and pretty dodgy bathrooms. The rooms upstairs with fans are much nicer, breezy, lighter and the shared bathrooms up here are better too. Don't count on having a hot shower or water pressure though - the shower would often stop running and was usually cold. The fales aren't like other fales in Samoa but were pretty good - 3 or 4 to a fale, small lockers.
Food
Breakfast is included and is the same most mornings; toast with a ration of butter and jam, Samoan fruit (papaya, coconut, pineapple), pancakes one morning a week and eggs another morning. Make sure you get up early though or you miss out.
The good
The pool is great for budget accom in Samoa and the deck, kitchen and bbq are great for socialising. Great for medical students, close to the hospital and usually filled with other students.
The bad
The owner is horrible and has a million ridiculous rules; e.g. no balls in the pool, no guests in the pool ever or anywhere in the hotel after 6pm (very atypical for Samoa), you must cancel within 14 days or pay a fee (this is unheard of in Samoa), absolutely NO noise after 10pm e.g. no watching movies, no sitting around talking. If you're after budget there are definitely cheaper places to stay,

clean facilities with SOME of the staff particularly lovely and helpful. Booked in low season, but found they were very very rigid with cancellation policy (be sure to check this before you book). Found alternative accomodation in same area which provided a room for the price of outrigger's outdoor fale. Found mosquitoes in this property exceptionally ravenous. Also noticed that there were no hot showers except in the afternoon when i stayed there. Would have been nice to have microwave in kitchen too. If you stay, note that their tour details in the lounge are often out of date.

We stayed here at the end of a 2 week trip around the Samoan islands so it was good to stay in a place that felt so comfortable after spening 2 weeks in Fales with really basic facitilies. I was surprised at how clean this place was. For me, nothing beats good, clean toilets and bathroom facilities and a clean bedroom to sleep in. The hotel staff were very polite and happy to help with anything. I also enjoyed the daily breakfast which included a boiled egg, a wide range of tropical fruits such as paw paw, oranges, coconut, passionfruit, bananas etc, a range of breads to choose from (it was great to not have to eat white bread again as they had wholemeal/rye/multigrain available) as well as tea and coffee.
They also had a relatively big swimming pool which was again, very clean and well maintained. The biggest thing I can point out about the entire place was the attention to maintenance. I found that most places we went to in Samoa lacked this and would often find in other accomodation places that when things broke or became run-down that they weren't fixed up. This place was freshly painted and event the garden appeared well kept.
We stayed in on of the rooms available for 150TALA per night (that's per room, so if it's shared- that's quite affordable). I noticed they also had some Fales in the garden as an alternative accomodation option. The price includes the room and breakfast. All other meals you need to find yourself.
All in all, a great budget option that gives you a hint of class with the level of accomodation in comparison to other backpacker options available in Apia.

Together with my eight-year old son I have been travelling around the islands of Samoa for seven weeks. During our stay in Samoa we have returned to the outrigger five times for a durations of one to four days.

The overall standard of the hotel is good. The rooms, the toilets and bathrooms are kept very clean and fresh flowers are put out daily.

The rooms on the first floor are very airy with high ceilings and a fan. The air conditioned rooms on the ground floor are smaller and have a small private patio towards the garden. We have stayed in both types and found the fanned rooms on the first floor the nicest.

The staff are fantastic. Helpful, smiling and always doing their utmost to give advice, lend a hand or find a solution to a problem.

If you are into big fried up breakfasts, you will probably not like the breakfast at the outrigger. We found it delicious: Heaps of fresh fruit from the market, toast and jam, coffee and tea – as much as you can eat. On Fridays they serve boiled eggs and on Sundays pancakes.

The pool is very clean and large compared even to the big upmarket hotels. There is a hammock and a lawn for sunbathing but no sun loungers. As the hotel is quite small the pool is never crowded.

The atmosphere at the outrigger is very friendly. Many of the guests are either returning or long term – and are therefore able to give valuable advice on where to go and what to do.

The outrigger hotel is owned and run by a Samoan-Danish couple. The owners are present at the hotel daily to deal with what ever question or problem that might occur.

My son and I have thoroughly enjoyed staying at the outrigger and would recommend it to other travellers wanting a nice affordable place to stay in Apia.

We stayed here for a few days on our Samoan holiday, and used it as a base to look around Upolo. The accomodation is very old and I would say basic. We are fairly budget travellers as we travel with two children. The family room was very large, but the mosquito nets had holes and the bathroom was very old. There was often no hot water to shower. The breakfast provided was very light. The staff were friendly. I would recommend that if you are staying in Apia, look to stay at Aggie Greys, and only stay one or two nights, and then get out to fale style accomodation on the beach. I would not stay here again.

Our stay was only a stopover in Apia en route to other (nicer) parts of the island. We were told that there were no rooms available, only garden fales. Having stayed in a couple of lovely fales the previous few nights, we were happy with this. However, the receptionist told us that this was the last available fale, so should anyone else turn up that day, we would have to share our room with them! It was late and we were tired so we just accepted this and hoped that it wouldn't happen. On viewing the fales, they were VERY close to one another, almost touching. Not very private at all. As we were going out for my partner's birthday that nght, we went out for a few hours, returning to our fale after dark, glad that nobody else had indeed been put in with us. After being kept awake by cockerels and fighting wild dogs for 3 hours or so, we finally fell asleep. Until the rain started, when it became obvious that our fale wasn't quite watertight. Luckily there was a spare mattress to move onto.

Breakfast was the next disappointment! The fresh fruit was way past its best so I decided to avoid that. The only other choice was toast which you had to toast yourself, and a tiny ration of butter per person.

This wasn't the cheapest place we stayed in(in fact one of the dearest), but it was definitely the worst. Would not go again.

Friendly staff and very clean accommodation. Complimentary breakfast is lovely with fresh fruit and a great assortment of breads. Some hot food is also served from pancakes to eggs. Fale accommodation is simple but comfortable. The air conditioned rooms are much better considering the very humid temperatures in Samoa. Mostly cold showers but very welcoming in the heat, within walking distance of a great little Italian restaurant called Giordano's and Lynn's Supermarket. Highly recommended, hassle free accommodation!! Definitely going back to stay there next time:)
