“At home in Samoa”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 25, 2013

Loved our one nights stay at Le Valasi's. Wished we could have stayed longer. Maria and Ross are fantastic hosts. Make you feel really at home. Fales are clean and tidy as are all facilities. Snorkling in the marine reserve is excellent, particularly the clams which are huge, and amazing to view. Lots of fish as well. Food was brilliant and a big thank you to Mireama for her fantastic service, candlelight dinner the works. The central fale is still under reconstruction after major damage from the cyclone but you can imagine how fantastic it will look once finished. The personal fales are nice and cool and we had our best nights sleep of all our time in Samoa. If you want a real Samoan experience away from the large resorts this is the place for you. Wished we could have stayed longer.

We had an amazing time at Le Valasi's. A friend recommended this place to me because of the access to snorkeling giant clams (we are talking like 2 feet wide, colorful, amazing creatures) but the fales were an amazing experience themselves.

The central fale is still under reconstruction post-cyclone, but still in operation! Our personal fale was very clean, adorably decorated, large, there's a full bed inside, and sleeping here was very relaxing and quiet. I enjoyed being away from the tourist-y madness and more settled into the village life of Samoa (but of course you have to be very conscious and respectful with dress, when you swim and with curfew bells- a bit more so than if you were in a touristy area so just be aware).

Shower was excellent, bathroom was clean and easy to access. The couple that runs the place are very friendly and offer very personal attention. They know a lot about Samoa and the area and are very interesting to talk to.

The meal was also absolutely delicious- served under the stars! Very romantic and wonderful experience. We wish we could have stayed longer!!!

This is an authentic stay. Travelled in May 2013. Fale's are a great size for 2. Fantastic for 1. Outstanding hospitality. Ross and Maria are very welcoming. It was like staying with family. Very inclusive hosts. Food brilliant, service excellent. Nothing is too much trouble. Facilities very clean, great toilet and shower. Still some storm damage, this did not detract from the stay, it added an element of Samoan authenticity. Family friendly. Giant clams straight across the road, easy and safe swimming. A relaxing stay. Will return in November with a group of 24 children and 6 adults. Definitely worth staying 3 nights. Great value for money.

Living in Hawaii for the past 22 years we islanders think we have the market cornered on the "Spirit of Aloha". NOT TRUE....In our short stay at Le Valasi's Beach Fales Ross and his wife Maria (and friends Peter and Kalala) showed us that "Talofa in Samoa means welcome my friends to our home". That is exactly what you get when you step into this wonderful local experience. You are treated as if you are their long lost cousins from across the sea. Unfortunately, we only had one day to experience this unique local island tradition but we will be back. The location has an unsurpassed and unobstructed view of the most beautiful crystal clear water for snorkeling, surfing, or just floating around in the sun. The grounds are well kept and adorned with tropical flowers, restroom was pristine by any standard in the world. Day "Fale's" are traditional with thatched roofs and they offer both local Samoan floor beds or for you less adventuresome people they also have traditional western mattresses. Looking for a real island experience, this is it with a big helping of local hospitality thrown in. Aloha to Ross and Maria (owners) for such a wonderful experience I hope that you will come to Hawaii sometime so we can show you our lovely island. Oh yes, I hate to admit it but the roads between downtown Apia out to Le Valasi's are better than ours in Honolulu these days:) If you're looking for a 4-Seasons hotel with tennis courts, spa and a golf pro this isn't it, but if you want a real Samoan experience (even for just a day trip), with your own private beach and warm local hospitality and food then look no further, this is your place! Aloha Oe', L & K (Hawaii) D & J (Salt Lake City)

Stayed for two nights back in November on a brief trip to Samoa on our return from Fiji. So happy we found this place! Absolutely amazing hospitality from Ross, Maria and the rest of their 'family'. Beautiful location set right in the village to give you the experience of what Samoa really has to offer. Absolutely divine meals prepared on the spot - served and waited like royalty really! Comfortable accomodation and more than adequate facilities. But certainly best of all would have to be the warmth of the hosts and their desire to get to know you while giving you an opportunity to find out more about Samoan life and the challenges faced by the local villagers. Would most definitely stay there again,

We can't understand how our experience was so different to these reviews.

Sure the place is in a nice village, and the gardens are pleasant but we stayed at plenty of palces that deserve these reveiws but not here. The fales are half finished, there's stuff lying around the garden like an old rusty bed under a coconut tree, some old wooden broke up wheel and big shipping container is the view from the fales. When we were there there was dog doo around the garden so we had to watch for landmines when we went from fale to the one small communal bathroom that was for all 4 bungalows. The rooms had good beds but there were tears in the moz nets and there was no electricity or light in the fales. Getting to the toilet at night was a challenge down really small and bad made steps on the fales and across the yard in the dark, try not to step on dog poo. The woven blinds and doors were rotten and smelly and falling apart.

We got there late and asked for the price without dinner. Dinner didn't look too inspiring really, just a bit of bbq There was a pretty cranky old guy who showed us around and told us that breakfast would have lots of food like toast and cereal and eggs like pancakes or scrambled eggs. In the evening there was no cultural experience or even discussion about samoa or advice of places locally to see, we just had to listen to old bad rock and roll music and celine dion from the kitchen that kept playing over and over and then over again in the morning and smell their cigarette smoke all night.

Dogs barked half the night and it was jsut damp all night in the fale.

The worst was in the morning when we had breakfast. So much for eggs as promised. When we saw other guests getting eggs we asked for ours and were told we wouldn't have eggs as we paid less. Ridiculous. We said we were promised by the guy but the old lady refused and was pretty rude. So we had white toast and vegemite (why would we want to eat that stuff? We're not ozzies and we're in SAMOA for goodness sake).

Look, they seemed very friendly - to the other group staying there, so maybe they just didn't like us. But seriously, this place has been really overrated by other reviewers. The beach is not great, there's no sand, and you can't get to the water except down a concrete ramp. The clams are fantastic but those 2 don't know much about them and doesn't seem like they've ever even seen them.

The place felt like a bit of a retirement home for ozzies. There was nothing traditional about our experience, no samoan food or music or culture - in fact western music, skippy corn flakes and vegemite- and the locals seemed to walk past the place pretty fast like they weren't welcome there. We would never go back and wished we'd stayed at Mangroves or savai'i longer instead.

Room Tip: Best room would be at another resort!

the hosts took special care of us, we were lucky to be the only guests at a time.our Samoa trip was rescued at this place!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Beach fale accommodation for a traditional Samoan style holiday. Le Valasi’s Beach Fales is run by Ross & Maria Jones who have made Samoa their home since moving over from Australia. Ross & Maria offer Beach Fale accommodation, which in our case is really a palagi house with a Samoan roof. It is fitted with an innersprung bed, table & chairs to be private clean and comfortable. All hotel linen is used PLUS towels are supplied. Separate toilet & shower areas nearby. Dining room, bar, and restaurant in the main fale overlooking Lefaga Bay. The Main Fale is a 60 year old traditional fale built without nails, only using Samoan rope to lash all the ribs, posts & beams together. Ross & Maria have repaired the building to its original glamour since the Cyclone in December 2012. It is one of the few remaining original Samoan houses left in Samoa as more & more families are changing to the conventional Palagi house. Large school groups can be accommodated using the big fale as a sleeping area. Le Valasi’s Beach Fales is located 35km south west of Apia in the heart of Savaia – Lefaga, only half an hour from the airport andaccessible by public transport or taxi service. Ross & Maria can arrange transfer from airport at a small charge. ... more   less
