Lusia's Lagoon Chalets

Reviewed August 30, 2010

I spent a week travelling around Savaii and stayed at Luisia's the first night of our trip. After staying at several other places over the next 5 days we decided to return to Lusia's for the last 2 nights due to the quality of service and relaxing beautiful surroundings. Lusia has created a lovely range of accomodation set amoungst beautiful bush and garden surroundings that go all the way down to the lagoon. The bush surroundings was a welcome retreat from the heat of Samoa, and swimming was fantastic - warm, clean and deep waters. There's a large deck which you can dive off and it's easily deep enough so no worries about the low/high tide. The food was delicious - probably some of the nicest food we had on Savaii, and the service was incredibly warm, friendly, and always very helpful. I would love to return to Lusia's - a great place to really relax and enjoy the gardens, bush, sea, food, ambience and spend some quality time.

I didn't stay at Lusia's, but i did rent a car from the hostel. Even if you are not planning on staying at Lusia's, it's in a great location, only a 10 min walk from the ferry terminal and very handy for picking up a car to cruise around the island - which is just what my friends and I did. The rate was reasonable and the car we took was in good condition.

Lusia is an absolutely lovely lady. She is more than happy to help you out with whatever you need. Her staff are very friendly and her hostel is located on a beautiful lagoon. It seemed like a very popular location, with a lot of guests. Many were there to hang out, have a swim, grab some food or play a bit of pool while waiting for the ferry to arrive. The food in the restaurant was yummy - we couldn't resist the ice cream and chocolate cake after a walk in the hot sun!

Thanks again to Lusia and her staff - it was a pleasure to meet you.

I stayed in the new modern building which i found comfortable and had a lovely view of the lagoon. Meals were lovely with the coconut cream sauce prawns absolutely to die for. Breakfast allowed a menu choice which was filling and tasty. But for me the highlight was the hospitality and customer service. Lusia and her staff were absolutely amazing and i felt like i was at home. They were always ready to help out and make my trip memorable.
Hiring one of her vans and using her staff as a tour guide i was able to see more of Savaii than i had imagined. I was actually tempted to stay longer but because of time i had to leave. One place in Samoa i would certainly go back to...

We were treated very well by the staff.Tui delightful and the girls charming. We stayed in fale over the lagoon which was very relaxing to watch the sunset. Our problem was how grubby and unclean the toilet and shower block was. They were actually very unclean and no toilet paper. In the mens, morning we needed to be up early to catch ferry and our fale light wasnt on.They control lighting and put it on at dusk but you may need to use it early morn.
We were taken to ferry which was appreciated and our meal was fine.

Lusia's is a fabulous place for accommodations of all sorts. She provides from basic beach fales to bedrooms overlooking the ocean with air conditioning and full baths. We could jump right from our balcony into the water and climb back up a ladder or swim to the large deck for drinks. The pace is laid back and the food was very good. The service was wonderful and it all stems from Lusia's warmth and hospitality.

Be fore-warned! Their "policy" is that you have to pay for your entire stay when you check in. Even before you've seen the room!

I'm glad we smelled a rat, because we had a bad experience and ended up shifting somewhere else. I see overall there are mostly good reviews, but here was our experience:

There was no key for our room. First we sat there for 3-4 minutes while they aimlessly wandered around shuffling through random drawers, then we would get it when the maid got back, then ... don't worry about it, not a problem, is very safe around here.

Some rooms looked nicer, but the "garden fales" are hideous plywood contraptions with ripped mosquito nets and suspect electrical wiring.

Dinner was good, but took 2.5+ hours to serve and the restraunt wasn't busy at all.

The location isn't very good. This location is closer for a trip to the blowholes, but not very accessible to any beach or reef.

No toilet paper in the restroom.

Another reviewer warned they don't accept credit cards. Wrong, they certainly do but probably just told the guest they didn't. They tried to make us pay cash too. A lot of deceit and games, many examples like this...... management seemed shady to us.

Management response:Responded December 2, 2011

Dear Sir,

We would like to extend our sincerest apologies for your unpleasant stay at our resort. First a bit about our "policy." Did you book in advance? Please understand that hotels on Savaii generally have a stricter cancallation policy than those in Upolu, as there is very little chance of us filling a canceled booking on short notice. Therefore payment for the accomodation is due by check in.

Sorry for the 3-4 minute wait while we found your keys, I know that must have been awful. The Garden Chalets are our budget option and are priced accordingly. I hope you at least found some charm in opening up your windows to the view of a beautiful rainforest and lagoon.

Ripped mosquito nets and poor service are unacceptable and we do sincerely apologies for that. We have gone through great lengths to train and build capacity in our staff to make sure these things do not happen again.

As for the cash vs. credit, if you were told to pay cash for your accomodation, that was incorrect, but for food and other purchases, it is critical that we have cash on hand to make change for other guests, pay our suppliers who only accept cash, and to cover transportation costs for our workers. However this issue too has been much improved over the past year and we can accept credit cards for any and all purchases, but yes we do still appreciate cash payments.

We hope that you would find a much more pleasant experience of you chose to stay with us again.

Go Chargers!

Sincerely,
Lusias Lagoon Chalets

Lusia's is right near the wharf so great for the end of your trip if you need to get on an ealry Ferry back to Upolu. Or when you first get to Savaii head there for breaky as the food was the best we had the whole week we were on Savaii. And real coffee! Also you will understand once you have stayed at a few palces on Savaii...but we had an ensuite here and there was hot water with.....WATER PRESURE! heheheh. It felt so good after having cold water dribbling from tubes everywhere else. Was a great way to end our week on Savaii. Lusia is such a beautiful host we had some lovely chats with her & was so nice to be welcomed by her & even looked after at breaky and dinner by her. Thanks Lusia xxx
