“Sustainable luxury”

We would love to be back at Savaii Lagoon Resort right now! The owners, managers and staff were all great, and so helpful (thanks so much Patricia). The food was magnificent (and thanks so much Christoph). I think we are the unhappy kiwis who missed out on the Mediterranean fish because we were checking out; we would have stayed if we hadn't had a pre-arranged booking elsewhere. We particularly liked the simplicity of the fales and the fact that we could safely drink water from the tap; we wish more places valued the sustainable approach of this resort. The swimming and snorkelling straight off the beach was wonderful. So was just sitting on the beach watching the ghost crabs scuttle back and forth. The only thing we didn't like was having to leave ....

I loved my stay at Savaii Lagoon. The managers (Christoph and Patricia) are wonderful people who do everything they can to ensure you have a wonderful experience. I so enjoyed breakfast each day - it is like a four course meal, served each day with different flowers gathered by the staff. the coffee is excellent - last thing I thought each night was and tomorrow I'll have coffee and ... and drift happily off to sleep.

We booked the studio - very luckily getting an excellent little hangout with a deck right at the end of the resort - literally 5 steps from the lagoon.

The snorkelling is good - recommend buying flippers and snorkel before going - as one day hire is equivalent to purchasing in NZ.

Patricia gave me a full body massage - bliss!!!! I was there when 8 fresh octopii were bought for sale - these were deemed fresh and of good quality and thereby purchased.

I was there too when 4 huge flaming schnapper were bought for sale and these too were deemed fresh and were purchased. Christoph stood in the restaurant window holding one of these massive fish and told us exactly how it would be prepared for the next nights dinner. Everyone who was there returned except two very unhappy kiwis - who unfortunately were checking out the next morning. Needless to stay the meal was outstanding - the Mediterranean Fish (talked about by other guests on this site too)

There was a great atmosphere in the restaurant with many times us staying late talking with other guests or Christoph - either after breakfast or dinner - sometimes both.

I quickly realised that we had lucked upon a very good place - especially because of the food - I have to mention the desserts - the best chocolate cake - closely followed by 4 layered lemon cheesecake and lemon tart.

I can't recommend this place highly enough! Things that I recommend doing on the island are a one day trip around and Patricia will help with the car hire - is the rainforest crater, the waterfall and the blowholes. Email me if you want more details.

I loved staying here and if there weren't so many more places in the world to see - I'd go back here every year - I am still considering it though. My enjoyment of this place is hugely to do with the current manages so check before booking that it is still them as they are on a 5 year contract.

If there are typos - it is because I am lazy (still on holiday mode) and have not checked this - forgive me ;)

Thanks so much for such wonderful hospitality Christoph and Patricia!!!!!

Our visit was nice and the managers were very accommodating and lovely. We felt welcomed and enjoyed our stay generally. That said, our expectations were a bit high given the reviews on this site. And they weren't exactly met in the area of the accommodations themselves. We felt it a trifle pricey for their basic nature. Overall we had a fine experience, but we ended up spending our last night at another hotel nearby for a significant amount less and were quite pleased there as the cost-value ratio seemed more appropriate.

Savaii Lagoon Resort is just a wedge of PARADISE on the beautiful South Pacific Island of Savaii, Western Samoa. We have never felt so at home in a resort before. Our holiday got off to a bad start as we inadvertently left our credit cards at home. This could have totally ruined our holiday until the managers of Savaii Lagoon resort came to our rescue. They were able to get our credit card details from NZ for us and let our next hotel know as well. This proved to us that our friends at Savaii Lagoon Resort REALLY care about their guests - we were taken care of in more ways than one. On top of that some kiwi guests staying at the hotel who had never met us before kindly and generously lent us some money!! (The owners on hearing of our predicament had offered to do that as well) The accommodation was excellent - neither of us like airconditioning very much - the ceiling fans and sea breeze blowing through our "fale" all day and night kept us really cool. Both of us came with coughs and the owners from Warkworth who just happened to be there at the time kindly supplied us with panadol and cough lozenges!! The food in the restaurant was beautiful and the breakfasts (see photos) more than adequate. From the very beginning the welcome we were given was warm and the managers incredibly hospitable. We were given a very informative and educational explanation of the local culture and geography on arrival as well! We just loved sitting on the beach reading, snorkelling in the corals just off the shore and kayaking in the clear azure blue waters. We are both teachers and wanted some peace and quiet ,and we both love kids! However the noise from some children was not just that of children happily playing but constant screaming, squabbling and cursing which was just a little off putting. This was handled very fairly and diplomatically by staff and we were happy to see that. We will DEFINITELY return and we would recommend the resort to any of our friends and are in fact doing so.

The beach and snorkeling were fantastic, the accommodation clean and roomy, the owners friendly but the resort seemed to lack the 'heart' of Samoa. Everywhere else we stayed in Samoa we were blown away by the friendliness and welcoming presence of the Samoan people but here the Samoan staff seemed nervous and very much in the background. The resort is run by a couple from Europe and there seems to be a focus on running a tight ship with notes pinned to the walls to remind you of various rules. We felt this place was really aimed at semi-retired/ retired couples without children. We had a great time because the setting was stunning and there were lots of great food options close at hand but we were made aware that they were aiming for a very quiet and subdued atmosphere. My advice to the managers is to loosen up a bit and relax the pressure on the Samoan staff; a bit of friendly chat is more important than a perfectly (precision) set table.

HIGHLIGHTS:

the beach - absolutely stunning! White sand, clear water, enough shade and space for all guests at the resort.

the room - cool, airy, running water that you could drink straight from the tap

The pizza from sekia next door

The chicken and chips from the shop across the road

The meals at Le Lagoto next door

LOWLIGHTS:

breakfast - the fruit plate consisted of papaya and coconut everyday, even though there was two large hands of bananas hanging in the tree next to the restaurant - we only saw pineapple once and bananas twice in 7 days!

the restaurant - we never ate there.... I think we decided to give it a miss after we were told on the first day "please order your dinner at 3pm, we only do fish and vegetarian and the fish needs to defrost slowly so 3 is the latest I can take it out of the freezer" (Great sales skills there huh?)

the beach - yep, the beach was also a low point... only because my children were told to be quiet constantly. I have no problem with someone asking my children to be quiet if they are being outrageously noisy, but normal child fun noise on the beach should be welcomed and encouraged! the double standard of the owners also bugged me... tell the kids to be quiet and then spend the next 4 hours building sun shelters on the beahc (think hammering right on the waterfront!) OR tell the kids to be quiet at 2.30 in the afternoon and then start working on the bungalows at 8am the next day when the guests are obviously still asleep!

Savaii Lagoon Resort COULD be great, but it just wasn't for us. The managment is well, odd. The owners are very friendly, but not very smart (why do 'capital works' during the busy season!!!). If you want to be a 12+ resort, then market yourself that way. But don't expect kids to be quiet during the school holidays. it ain't gonna happen!

If this guest had asked the obvious question, she would have been advised that the bananas were not ripe enough for eating. They hang inside a cloth from a tree in order to ripen and Samoa, unlike NZ and Australia, does not have a continuous supply of imported bananas. There are periods of time in Samoa when bananas are in short supply waiting on the ripening process. As for pineapples, it is not pineapple season until towards the end of October, so the fact that this guest was served pineapple was a bonus. Savaii Lagoon guests are served a most generous complimentary tropical breakfast of cereal, fruits in season and toasts and spreads, with tea or plunger coffee.

The “normal child fun noise” referred to was definitely not so. Children playing is a happy sound but this was absolutely the reverse. The younger child aged about 5 continually yelled from the water each time he was on the beach. Several guests complained about the incessant noise and the four letter words being used by the two children. One guest said that he had tried to read a paragraph of his novel about five times but was unable to progress beyond that because of the noise. These children were spoken to once on one day and three times in a very short space of time on another. The mother did nothing to discipline the children and one of the guests sitting on the beach was told by this mother that no one should come to a family resort if they did not like the noise of children! Savaii Lagoon welcomes families and would be loathe to change this policy by not allowing children, so it is reasonable to expect that there will be a measure of control exercised by parents, to enable those without children to enjoy the beach also. The resort enjoys many return visits from families, but the behaviour of these children in this incident was unacceptable and would be unacceptable anywhere.
The beach umbrellas referred to were prepared off the property and assembled only on the beach with an apology to this guest and complimentary soft drinks. We do our best to provide for the needs of our guests and this must include maintenance and minor capital works as happens in all resorts.

My wife & I recently stayed 5 nights at Savaii Lagoon Resort. From the time we arrived, which was @ 10.00am following an overnight flight from Auckland & ferry trip, Patricia & Christoph look after our every need. The bungalows are spacious & well equipped, including most cooking facilities.
We had a very relaxing time, swiming, snorkling, hired bikes, walked to nearby Menasa & turtle display. Christoph's food was great!
The Resort is located in a Samoan village so you are able to capture some the atmosphere of daily village life when walking outside the resort.
Thoroughly recommend as a place to blob out for a few days.
