The location of Joelan's is stunning - simple fales on a white sand beach overlooking a crystal clear lagoon. Waking up to the sunrise each morning is a pleasure (even for us non morning folk). Fale Soa, her husband Sione and her daughters are warm, friendly and generous hosts who make sure you are well fed and comfortable in your fale.

The food was outstanding - a lovely selection of Samoan food (oka, taro, fish, palusami, chop suey, coco ese etc) with plenty of familiar foods too such as papaya, pineapple, bananas, pancakes, bread and eggs. There was always plenty of it too.

The facilities are very basic, there are two toilets and two showers (cold water) and a bit dark and dingy though clean. There is a shop a short 15 minute walk away to buy cold beers and other snacks (though if you ask nicely one of the family will give you a ride there and back).

The only interruption to the blissful surrounds were the regular coming and going of family members and friends - not that this was a problem as they were all very friendly, but we were kept awake to the wee hours one morning as they partied in the main fale. However, we were more than welcome to join them but chose to retire early so we are not complaining.

This is a lovely place to stay if you are looking for a simple, relaxed and authentic stay in Samoa.

Room Tip: If you do have a choice I would recommend one of the outer lying fales (rather than the ones directl...

Unfortunately we only had one night here, although as a couple in our mid fifties, we realistically would stay maximum 3 nights. The beach is gorgeous and the water warm ++. We loved spotting a turtle as we sat looking out from our fale. Breakfast lunch and dinner is included and the quality of the meals was fantastic. We are already planning our next visit! We are not resort lovers and to be able to absorb the local culture was fantastic. Highly recommend.

We stayed for 11 nights in a open beach fale. Best decision ever made. It was the most relaxing holiday in a long time. Very much Samoan way of life. Breakfast, lunch and dinner included is just perfect. That meens that you can spend your days swimming, tanning, reading, frisbee or volleyball and never have to leave the place. We were there in "wet" season but the weather gods where kind and sleeping in an open fale was an amazing experience. Waking up and seeing the sunrise before your eyes are even properly open. Just gorgeous. And the family became like my own family.

Siona and Fala Soa made sure that everyone was well fed and comfortable the staff was friendly and willing to interact and teach many different traditional ways of living the Samoan life fishing hat making basket making catching crab preparing umu. If you are willing to experience the Samoan way of life and embrace it you truly appreciate the rhyme and reason behind everything they do. I don’t think you ever go to the beach to be inside so the fales had everything you need to enjoy life on the beach and without such wonderful hosts and helpful staff ready to either clean your fale or catch you a fish my time in savii will always be remember with lots of smiles great food and great people.

We had the best time ever: the view is just incredible, the water is like a swimming pool, the owners are very nice and the food is yummy. Every afteroon we got coconuts and we spent our holiday chilling and swimming. I would like to be there again now!

A nice and low key place to stay for a night or two. The fales (little open huts) is right on the beach, so make sure to not leave your flip flops outside, as the tide might take them. The fales come with mosquitonets and you share shower and toilet facilities with the other guests in a separate little house. There are no power plugs in the fales, but you can have stuff charged next to the kitchen, just ask the staff. This is not the ideal snorkeling place, but the beach is nice for a dip after a long day in the heat.
Included in the price is dinner and breakfast (lunch is free, if you happen to be there at lunchtime – I love that kind of logic). And 50 WS$ pr. person is very cheap for accommodation and food, I don't think you find a better price anywhere in Samoa. Food is served as a buffet and it is really good.
Only thing lacking is a way to rinse the sand off your feet before entering your fale. That would be a nice addition.

Joelan's Beach Fales is incredible.

The people there are extremely nice and the food there is absolutely amazing. For only 50 Tala per person per night, you are spoiled like no other. We had the best food during our entire trip at Joelan's and enjoyed every one of our 6 nights there. I'll go ahead and list some categories and go in depth with them:

Food: 5 out of 5 stars Best in Samoa. Enough said. Falesoa and her family make the best Samoan food I've ever had and they give you a lot of it too!

Location: 5 out of 5 stars It's located in the village of Lano, which is on the eastern part of the island. If you're coming from the Saleloga wharf, take the PuaPua bus and stop at Lano. As for the actual location, this place is situated beautifully. The private beach of Joelan's has awesome sand and some fish (if you want to snorkel). Also, the main road is just right next to the resort which makes it easy for you to step outside and grab a bus (depending on what time of day it is and what day it is; don't expect a lot of buses on Sundays).

Friendliness/Hospitality/Service: 10 out of 5 stars. Falesoa and her family went out of their way to help us all the time! Some of us planned a trip to the blowholes (which was on the Western part of Savaii) and they had to go to the Saleloga market, so they took all 6 of us in their van and brought us halfway to our destination! Also, whenever we needed anything, like charge our electronics or use a phone, they gladly helped us out!

The best part about this place, though, was the other travelers we met there. We befriended people from Germany, New Zealand, France, Argentina, South Africa and even Zimbabwe in our short time. I think this place attracts more backpackers and travelers than families or tourists because it doesn't have a lot of the unnecessary amenities most first world tourists look for (i.e. internet, air-conditioning). Regardless, I love the fact that this place has a bunch of travelers keen on getting to know people from all over the world and I love the simplicity of the fales and lifestyle here.

Some tips: Bring insect repellent!!!
