“Worth visiting Ibarra just for this hostel”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

We had a fantastic time with Emerson and his mother at El Refugio Terra Esperanza. From learning to make belts to eating meals together and talking politics in front of the fire, everything about the place was a wonderful break from the cities we came from. We both just wished we could have spent more time in Ibarra and taken full advantage of their knowledge of the area. If you're in Ecuador – and definitely if you're coming south from Colombia – it's worth coming to Ibarra just to spend time in this hostel.

"Refugio Terra Esperanza" is a really cool, laid-back hostel in the lovely village La Esperanza, near Ibarra. Emerson the owner is absolutely fun to hang out with and can arrange a variety of adventure trips, for example to Volcano Imbabura, Lake Cubilche and nearby waterfalls. And when you are feeling lazy, you can hang out at the fireplace or learn how to make your own leather belt or bag. His mother's home-cooked food is delicious - also if you are vegetarian.

I stayed at Refugio Terra Esperanza for a few days during my travels through Ecuador this summer and I am so glad I did. La Esperanza has the most magnificent scenery and staying with Emerson is the best way to experience it. In my short stay, Emerson took us on a gorgeous hike through the mountains to a hidden waterfall, included us in the town's parade and celebrations , shared traditional food with us and made me feel like a member of his family. A trip to La Esperanza is a MUST in Ecuador and there is no other way to experience it than by staying here. You will love the lovely decor of the hostel nestled at the foot of el Volcán Imbabura where Emerson will make sure that you experience the true beauty of La Esperanza while giving you a feel for the culture of the town.

Emmerson and his mother Maria are fantastic hosts. From day one I felt welcomed as part of the family. There are multiple opportunities for adventure: hiking, biking, cascading, horseback riding, etc, as well as time to learn a bit about artesian leather work, cook with Maria, or sit around the fire and enjoy a good chat.
Accommodations are rustic but comfortable. Mother Maria will make sure you are fed well. My only issue was with the shower. Very brief period of luke warm water on one occasion and cold water on another. Otherwise, great stay.

Refugio Terra Esperanza is a cozy and very nicely decorated hostel. The owner, Emerson, is a great guy and takes guests to the top of Volcano Imbabura on a day-long hike. I highly recommend if you visit Ibarra that you stay at his hostel and tour with him up the mountain, you will have a fantastic time!

Emerson and his Madre are the BEST! We fell in love with them and they treated us like family. Very eclectic architecture and decor but warm and friendly. Emerson took me and my wife in a great scenic trek and his Madre took my parents to a great small mountain town for a tour! LOVE and miss you guys!
