Around the bus terminal, the plaza central and the plaza iglesia are dozens of hostels; infinitesimal rooms, no keys, single light bulb, broken window, wall paper from the Nixon administration; All have at least 3 dogs. There are streets that run between the plazas that are lined with dirt bike and quad rentals, chiva excursions, massage parlors, souvenir shops, and bars; chaos being the main activity. Away from all that in a corner of town between the Thermas La Virgen and the Santa Clara pool are four hotels of unusual poise and character. One is the Hotel Volcano, 12 rooms off the street in the middle of the block, high ceiling sunlit rooms some with lofts with extra beds, the bathrooms are small, huge wall sized windows, rooms 8,9,10 have large decks with views of the city, water fall, mountains and sun, it is quiet. Lay in bed and watch the clouds against the mountains. Listen to the waterfall. Good Wi-Fi. Basic breakfast in the restaurant/bar overlooks the pool. Go to dinner around the corner at Posada de Arte. Weekends in Baños are madness the Hotel Volcano is at a distance from that. Midweek we had the place to ourselves. Booked two rooms, stayed 8 days.
