Hacienda Manteles is a paradise in the mountains of Ecuador. The access is good and the experience is extraordinary. The service is excellent and you become friends with everyone there. The view of mountains and valleys in endless, all green, and clean. The food is gourmet in a cozy and unique environment. We recommend it to anyone trying to experience nature at its best and kind people at its best also. I need to return and take my husband with me this time. I am sure my daughter will take us if we ask her. Go with your beloved ones. You will be glad you did.

We decided to stay in Patate instead of Baños. The directions on the hotel's web page indicated shorter distance than it real was. The road is not paved in the last part but his NOT in bad condition, it is a typical mountain road in South America. You feel a little bit in the middle of nowhere.
We got to the hacienda without a reservation (our mistake), but the staff was very nice, cooked a simple dinner for us and gave us a very nice room. The house is beautiful and the rooms clean & well set. The internet service is not consistent due to the remote location. The hotel is located in a narrow valley between mountains and if it doesn't rain one can see the Tungurahua Volcano. The manager and the housekeeper were very helpful and cordial.
The wines were a little expensive.

Room Tip: All rooms looked pretty much same nice to me

On a recent Gate 1 vacation to Ecuador, we spent the night at this old, charming Hacienda. The views were spectacular, food average but the extremely overpriced wine charge left a bitter taste in our mouth.
While eternally grateful for our incredibly capable tour driver, Ivan, I am rather surprised Gate 1 took the large bus up this dangerously narrow road.
We stayed in Room 5 of the original home; like a bed and breakfast room. The bedroom floors sank badly and creaked loudly every step of the way to the bathroom. I was fearful of waking the entire house at night.
The staff was wonderful and hard working but, it seemed, not very happy. The host, Fernando, however was a bit over the top giddy/silly then at other times somber and snobby.
The worst part was the fact that there was no wine list, no prices, and we later found out that friends who had bought the same bottle of wine were charged differently. Upon checkout, my husband paid $61 for ONE bottle of Ecuadorian wine! (Did Fernando do this intentionally because we decided not to buy one of their T-shirts he was pushing to sell??) Yes, I understand the VAT tax and that the place is out of the way but that is VERY extreme! I feel like we were definitely ripped off. And others in our group also had a similar experience. This would easily be solved by PROVIDING A DRINK PRICE LIST!!!! But maybe that is the point...........

Room Tip: Stay in the newer buildings.

The location and views are breathtaking, however the rooms differ vastly from Rock Star luxury to dorm style musty smelling rooms with no view. The eating area was very quaint and pretty. However, we were "shocked" to have been charged $75 for 2 bottles of average Cab Sauvignon wine. When I asked for a wine list, I was told there was none, and only 4 types of red wine available. I was only told the amount at check out. At $37.50 per bottle, I would expect the inn to let me know the price in advance. I was shocked at check out. My aunt bought a round of drinks (6 or 7) after dinner, and her bill came to a ridiculous $85. This is a rip off, and unacceptable for Ecuador. Then, the credit card machine wouldn't work at check out. Very disappointed, and other than the view, would Not recommend to others. Wish I had time to speak to the owners, to complain and get some type of credit. Others in our group were equally unhappy about the prices and surprise high charges.

Dear Guest,

Thank you so much for your comments. We will take them into account in order to improve our services in every way possible.

Hacienda Manteles is an Old Family Hacienda that opened its doors to guests from all around the world. We have maintained our original Hacienda house structure and refurnished several parts of the old Hacienda to accommodate more guests. We strive to provide the best service and quality to all our guests. Your comments have helped us to fix this situation for future guests and to increase maintainance at the room you stayed at. The problem has been fixed.

Thanks to your comments we are revising our wine and liquor offered in order to provide our clients with a more varied wine list taking into consideration the relation between quality and price. We serve different type of wines at the Hacienda. Nevertheless, in the past few years, the Ecuadorian government has imposed high taxes on many products considered to be luxurius (wine, liquor, cars, others) and that has made these items very expensive.

We would also like to apologize for the inconvience you experienced with the credit card machine. Banks in America and Europe have started to use a new chip system within their credit cards. This is new to Ecuador and the banks are currently adapting their electronic systems to accept these new credit cards with incorporated chips. Hacienda Manteles will receive a new credit card machine at the end of the month in order to facilitate payments with this new system.

We hope you come back and see the changes.

Thank you again for your comments.

We were with a travel group and were selected to be up-graded to a suite. What an amazing view of the volcano! Fernando, our host was at the bus to greet each and every one of us, and he came to our room to give us a personal welcome. We had dinner in the dining room, and the food was prepared very well, with flavor and attraction. I would stay here again, you leave with the feeling of having visited relatives.

Room Tip: The views from the suites are amazing and not to be missed!!

The staff and Manager at Hacienda Manteles were super friendly, like family. The Rooms were very cozy and comfortable. It was more like visiting family than a hotel. Rasta, the donkey, was a highlight of the stay. There are lots of animals to keep you entertained. Also the surrounding garden was beautiful. I would recommend the Hacienda Manteles to all my friends and hope I will also be able to visit again.
