I went in October and was lucky enough to have an almost completely unobstructed view throughout most of the day/sunset/night from my hotel in Banos. We could see the top with smoke billowing out. It was really pretty active at night with lots of rumbling and spurts of red lava flow. This was one of the coolest things that I got to experience in Ecuador.

“Awesome volcano - shame about the clouds...”
Reviewed September 4, 2013

Tungurahua was very quiet when we were in Banos in August, however it is still a very impressive volcano. We hiked up to a couple of miradors from Banos and also did the evening trip to a viewpoint for $3. Almost all of the tour operators in Banos sell tickets for $3 to go up to a mirador at 7pm, 9pm or 11pm. The trip takes about 2 hours - 45 minutes up in a 'party-bus' with flashy lights and insanely loud music, which is very good fun, then about 30 minutes at the mirador where the guide explains about the volcano (in Spanish) and there is food and drink for sale and entertainers juggling with fire - which was really entertaining. We also got a free hot drink of passionfruit and cinnamon with a shot of cana which was pretty potent. The downside for us was that it was very cloudy so we only got a glimpse of the volcano, but going on the party bus, the talk on the volcano and the atmosphere at the top was definitely worth $2.

“Sound and light show!”
Reviewed July 4, 2013

When we were in Banos the volcano was particularly active. You could here it booming constantly. Unfortunately we could never see it due to the clouds. We hiked up high in the mountains to get a view but still no luck. After every boom all you could see was plumes of black smoke within the clouds. Finally we took a van up to the Antennas one night and from there we were higher than the clouds and had amazing views of the volcano exploding and spewing out lava. Best fireworks show I've ever seen. What an incredible experience.

“View an active volcano”
Reviewed May 20, 2013

At night you can see a display that resembles fireworks as the volcano spews giant rocks into the air. It is necessary to get up into the hills to get a good view and a four wheel drive vehicle is necessary.

“Awesome View”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

There is a hiking trail to go up the volcano also a bike and car trail. I took the car as far as it can go and there you park the car and walk up a trail close to the top and the view is amazing.
