“Charming and chic eco hostel”
Reviewed May 25, 2012

La Casa Verde was easily our favorite hostel of our 8 weeks of travel through South America. We originally booked for 3 nights, but couldn't bring ourselves to leave...ended up staying 7! Our huge superior double room was heaven on earth - sunny, airy, and well decorated with earthy colors and natural fabrics. Think: Eco-chic but without pretense. Bathrooms awesome (soft towels, homemade soaps) and the shower...oooh that shower: Great water pressure and eeeendless hot water. We loved it. Breakfast was also a highlight: good coffee, fresh juices, fruit salads, thick, warm slices of homemade bread with cheeses, avocado, tomatoes and a myriad of homemade jams...and lest I forget my personal favorite: the homemade coconut granola. Mmmm...

Doug and Rebecca are friendly, down-to-earth hosts and are easy to approach with questions. Upon check-in, they provide guests with a pamphlet that contains a variety of tips regarding the town's offerings (such as nightlife, restaurants, hikes, canyoning, horseback riding tours, etc.), which, they will gladly arrange for you if you ask. Also, they don't take a commission from any of the eco-tourism operators in the town, so expedition prices are as cheap as if booked alone. Finally, another bonus worth mentioning is their in-house massage facilities - I booked a 1 hour session/$25 with their private masseuse and it was Aaamazing.

We stayed in Casa Verde for 5 nights in a superior room in May 2012 and loved it! More like staying with friends-of-friends than in a hotel/hostel. Doug and Rebecca (and their staff) are very welcoming, friendly and helpful. After a while travelling it can be lovely to find a place that feels so homely and where you can pop down to the kitchen barefoot any time to make yourself a cup of tea or get a glass of water (both free).
The building is airy and spacious with lots of wood and all spotlessly clean. The bed was more comfortable than the one we have at home!
It's about a 20 min walk from town, but this just means it's got even better views across the river and valley and if you don't fancy the (very safe) walk, buses are easy and taxis are cheap. Being out of town a bit also means there's great access to some stunning walks (which D and R can advise you on). The locals are also very friendly, always saying hello and often stopping for a chat.
Breakfast is great - including homemade granola, fruit salad, fresh juice and proper coffee. They also do lovely (and reasonably priced) dinners with lots of fresh veggies from the garden.
Their Eco-efforts (which are quite impressive) are also a real bonus if you're into that sort of thing. If you're not then it won't detract from your stay at all - you'll just be doing some good for the environment without even realising!
We whole-heatedly recommend this place. Sure there are cheaper places to stay in Baños but if it's in your price range, go for it, and if it's not - it's still a great place to treat yourself!

Room Tip: The superior rooms have amazing wrap-around views.

I loved this hotel and very much enjoyed Doug and Rebecca who are devoted to living and working as green as possible. Any time we needed anything they were happy to help. They called cabs for us, gave us traveling advice, helped us set up hair appointments and tried to get us another white water rafting trip when ours was canceled. They are truly a full service hotel. The hotel itself is beautifully appointed and decorated. We got a corner room with stellar views from both windows and the rushing river sound put us right to sleep. The only down side is that the hotel is a bit far out of town, which is good in that it's quiet and beautiful but just the slightest bit inconvenient if you want to be out late at night.

Room Tip: We initially wanted a superior room with a balcony but they were full and then we discovered the com...

thanks for your review. we're glad to have been able to help out wherever we could. sometimes things don't always go as planned in ecuador, so we try and help smooth things out as much as possible for our guests to maximise their enjoyment time here. our location can sometimes make it difficult if you want to be out late at night. unfortunately, taxis aren't always easy to find late in the evening (especially in the wee small hours of the morning). best to get back here before 2am to make the most of the comfortable beds and the sound of the river ;-)

My son and I stayed at La Casa Verde a couple weeks ago and had a fantastic time. The hostel is newly constructed by the owners Rebecca and Doug who have made this a labor of love. Everything is well thought out and the design features (bottles cemented into the walls etc) create a very authentic / modern decor.

Both Rebecca and Doug were extremely helpful in arranging local activities (zip line, canyoning etc). I really relied on them to make recommendations and they delivered!

This is not a "fancy" place to stay - it is however authentic, newly constructed and very clean. There is really nice artwork on display throughout the hostel.

I should also mention that the food is excellent - again nothing fancy but healthy and homemade (as well as homegrown in the case of some of the fruits and vegetables.

As some of mentioned this can be difficult to find - it is not far off the main road - but unless you have very specific directions you would never find it.

I will definitely be back!

thanks for the great review. we're glad you enjoyed your time here and that we could be a part of making your trip, with your son, a special one. that's great you liked the food also. we try to grow and make as much as we can. it's refreshing to actually know what you're eating, huh!? our garden doesn't service all our dietary needs...with a little more time, we'll get there! you're right, we are difficult to find for the first time. however, once you're here there are no probs finding us again. thanks again for the review.

We stayed a couple of nights in early April. We arrived in Banos at night so it was difficult to find the location. The roads near the Hostel are quite rough and it feels like you're about to end up in a wrong back alley.

Upon our arrival, Rebecca was there to meet us and despite the dark location, her warmth lit up the area (as did the light at the front). She gave us a quick tour of the common areas and led us up to our rooms. The wood finishings and furniture really gave the place a nice warm feeling.

The beds were nice, albeit a bit firm for my liking... my other travellers were quite comfy. The rooms felt like you were in a bedroom in a big house.. quite a nice feeling overall - like being part of a big family.

In the kitchen area the fridge had nice, REALLY cold beer and soft drinks at a very reasonable price. What a nice suprise! If you felt like hanging out OUTSIDE, there were the balconies on the second floor and the hanging chairs outside the kitchen. It was nice to listen to the crickets chirping away at night.

Overall, this is a really nice place to stay. I think they need to do a little work on the outside of the building, as it feels a bit unfinished. I don't care how eco-friendly you want to feel, you've still got to put the finishing touches on the outside to give it the professional, cared about feeling.

Thanks for the lovely stay and good time!

Room Tip: The rooms down near the kitchen area appear to suffer from their proximity to the kitchen. Early mo...

thanks for your review. good to hear you had a nice time here. you're right, the front is still unfinished and needs to be finished. as we do most of the building work ourselves, it takes time for things to happen around here, especially with a few other priority building projects on the go (like the roof extension to prevent water damage on the eastern side of the building - which is a priority as we're nearly in the heart of the rainy season). also, as we demand a higher quality of workmanship and the building/construction is to international standards, the front will also reflect this once complete...rest assured. we're hoping to have the front complete by august/september and in the most eco friendly way possible ;-)

We had a delightful stay at Casa Verde! Rebecca and Doug were super friendly, welcoming and helpful and the breakfast and other meals available were all delicious and home cooked. We felt very much "ät home" and highly recommend their eco-hostel.

I'm an American living in Ecuador and I've been to Banos a couple of times. The first time I stayed at a ridiculously-overpriced hotel in town (Sangay) and the second time, THANKFULLY, at Casa Verde. It's a long walk from town, but the taxis are dirt cheap, so who cares? It's no-frills, but tasteful and comfortable. Rebecca is very kind. This place is affordable and I enjoyed being there as much as I enjoyed all our activities in Banos. Our room had spectacular views. I wish I could wake up to that every morning!

Room Tip: Try to get one of the second floor rooms in the back of the house with a private balcony and hammock...
