We loved this place. I liked our room, it had 3 twin beds (which meant I didn't get to cuddle with hubby for 4 nights oh well), the bathroom was roomy with a fully tiled shower that had hot water. There were plenty of blankets on the bed for those chilly mountain nights.
Our room had a balcony not facing the waterfall but with a pretty peaceful view. We left the balcony door open most of the time and could hear kids playing soccer from a few blocks away. It was pleasant. We never lacked for wi-fi. Some rooms have it, I'm told that some rooms don't.
The breakfast terrace was nice and had a 360 view. We ate breakfast every morning and they charge it to your room, always very good. One of our servers was a little grumpy every day but everyone else was nice. We also used the laundry service which they also charge to your room. It came back clean and folded (not as good as I fold but we were stuffing them into airtight bags and then into backpacks.
I was afraid of the bill with all the breakfast and laundry. Our rooms were $9 a night per person. That comes to $108. I told hubby not to freak out if the final bill was over $170, 3 people eating breakfast 4 days and a huge pile of laundry could add up fast. The total was $141. $33 extra for the food and clothes, not bad, especially since this place is well located and very safe feeling. My daughter was comfortable enough to stay in the room while we went for food. She's 12.
I encourage families to stay here for a clean, safe, affordable place.

Room Tip: The triple private with a balcony on the 3rd floor was quiet clean and had wifi.

We stayed at Chimenea a total of 3 nights. We were enjoying our stay until we decided to make use of their laundry service. When we picked up the bag marked with our room number we discovered that half of the items were missing... we had to return to the reception desk and only then did they find the other half of our stuff, unmarked, so they could've given it to anybody.

We then discovered that an item was missing - an incredibly important and quite expensive item for a traveller. When we returned to the desk the previously nice and friendly staff became aggressive and defensive refusing to acknowledge that they had ever washed the item and blamed us. The man who we think is owner was very aggressive towards us, who while raising his voice to us stood sharpening a knife in an intimidating manner - completely unnecessary and ridiculous.

The hostal can be a nice place to stay until something goes wrong and you find that the staff become indifferent and rude. We never did receive any form of apology - even though they left the laundry off our total bill, clearly an admission that they were at fault.

If you value your things don't trust them with your laundry - they are incompetant.

We had a very good experience in this hostel as a group of 4. The breakfast café upstairs has great, inexpensive food and a beautiful view. The electricity is consistent and if you wait about 30 seconds the water is hot enough to shower. It's very close to the Virgen hot springs. The desk staff was always willing to answer our questions.

Room Tip: Rooms on upper floors away from the lobby are quieter

We stayed here 3 nights. The hotel fits to banos as place to relax. We used the local massage service and like it. The rooms are simple but nice and clean. We had our one bathroom and hot water for just 20$. This is a really good price value you get for Ecuador.

Like my title implies, this hostel wasn't anything special.

Pros:

- decent price for rooms
- nice sized private rooms
- quite clean
- nice view from rooftop

Cons:

- staff impersonal and not really helpful
- available kitchen had almost no utensils for guest use (everything was locked up) which was extremely frustrating when trying to cook
- the kitchen in the morning is a breakfast restaurant, it's quite pricey for average food.
- wi-fi was terrible
- false advertising for their hot tub (you need four people to book it, and you pay hourly)
- pool is ice cold (Baños isn't a very warm town)

For us, the cons outweighed the pros. We stayed a few nights Before moving on to Cuenca so we dealt with it. I would reccomend checking out other hostels before planning to stay here.

The hostel is far from the bus station but near the hot springs. I felt a good location as the roof terrace had good views. The dorm rooms were a little tight in size but had space outside to dry things. The internet and services were good and breakfast tasty yet not too expensive. The pool is very cold and free and the hot tub costs money to rent for an hour. I also had a massage on site which was good value and very nice.

This was a budget friendly hostel with affordable spacious rooms, most with balconies. The location is perfect! It's close to the public baths and restaurants. It met most of our needs except for the wi-fi which was non-existant in the rooms and very weak, even in the lobby near the router. I have 2 suggestions for this hostel 1 put numbers on the doors of the rooms. There are two floors of rooms and the hallways look exactly alike. I tried to open my door onky to discover that I was on the wrong floor. Someone tried to open our door making the same mistake.
2. Improve your wi-fi connection. I wouldn't stay here again simply for this reason. Travelors always need to be connected, at least we do.
