Travelling to Ushuaia to board a ship to Antarctica, this is the hotel that we were placed at. Getting there makes you wonder what it's going to be like as the roads are quite rough and with a little rain, it's interesting! The staff are attentive and truely try to be as helpful as possible. English is understood by most, but certainly that they're preferred way to communicate. The bar & kitchen staff are very polite, but the systems seem to ensure that nothing can happen quickly. The views though across the passage to Chile and the mountains are breathtaking. The scenery, the bay area, all stunning to photograph - although watch your footing around the rocky "beach" area. This was a lovely place to stay as far as views and serenity were concerned, but it was a taxi trip to get into town which was a bit of a pain. They do run a shuttle, but it was quite infrequent.
They are obviously used to it getting really, really cold. The bed covers are thicker & heavier than anything I've ever seen before. The weight would be enough to give me a bad night, and then there are spare blankets and wall heaters. We were there is summer and the heaters were still turned on, although we promptly turned them off - and we removed the duvet....... The rooms are comfortable, the bathrooms have everything you need, fine for a day or twos stay. Definitely book a room with a Channel view.

Room Tip: Definitely a Beagle Channel view room - awesome - it can be a different view each time you look out...

This hotel is used as a jumping off point for Antarctic expeditioners. Certainly it was in our case. The restaurant was nice. Breakfast is chaotic with the food hither and thither. Suggest a better layout especially when 100 turn up at once. Despite all I have said very comfortable and the staff are great.

Room Tip: Get a room overlooking the Beagle channel

I would recommend this place to everyone only because of the amazing view of the Beagle Channel that it offers. Apart from the location of the hotel, which is fantastic, there is not much to rave about. While booking be sure to book a channel view room or you will be staring at nothing. The standard channel view room has awesome views of the channel is otherwise does not come close to the luxury of similarly priced hotel rooms in Argentina. English speaking guests will have some difficulty communicating with the staff at their restaurant as they are not fluent in English and only speak Spanish. The restaurant menu doesn't offer a wide selection of dishes (only one vegetarian dish on the menu!). Overall, if location is a factor for you and given that there aren't many hotels in this category in Ushuaia, it's a good choice to stay. However, if you are planning an Antarctica cruise, then stay at a cheaper place to save up.

We arrived here a day ahead of our Antarctica expedition. This hotel is a wonderful start to our trip. The views of the Beagle's Channel and the surrounding snow-capped hills are beyond words. From our room's window we see cormorants, sea gulls, hawks and the resident ducks ( a couple who build their nest in the rocky beach in front of the hotel) for whom the hotel is named. We spend a day hiking in the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park. After that we soaked in the hotel jacuzzi with the wonderful view of the mountains. Who can disagree that "Life is"! We have tried breakfast, lunch and dinner at the hotel. The food is much better than we expect from a hotel restaurant. The dessert at the end of our dinner was as good as the best we have in even France. The service in the hotel was always courteous and friendly. Everything was simply perfect.

Room Tip: We tried both the standard room with the mountain view and the more delux ocean view. The price diff...

Like many others, we stayed at the Los Cauquenes overnight at the start of our expedition to South Georgia and Antarctica. It was a wonderful experience, especially after the long trip from the US and an earlier overnight stay in Buenos Aires. The rooms are very nice, and the views from the common areas in the hotel are spectacular. Food was very good, and we ate three meals there. My wife especially enjoyed the beautiful flowers blooming right outside our window, and unexpected treat. Service was great, and we appreciated the free shuttle rides to and from downtown Ushuaia.

My only regret is that we didn't arrive a couple of days earlier so we would have had more time to enjoy the area and the hotel. Would have liked to try the spa.

Although located a ten minute drive out of downtown Ushuaia, the peacefulness and great views make up for that disadvantage. The hotel sits above a beach of the Beagle Channel. The staff were, for the most part, quite attentive. A lavish breakfast buffet gets you off to a good start each day. There are several nice areas to sit outside or inside before dinner and enjoy the view with a glass of wine. The spa facilities are quite nice as well. The restaurant is o.k., but downtown Ushuaia has many more options.

Visited mid January with three adult companions. This hotel was chosen by the tour company for a stop over on our way to Antarctica.

A nice small resort (international small luxury hotel award) located on the Beagle Channel. As part of the service from the travel agent we were met at the airport. If one were going on their own, it seemed like the best idea is to hire a cab. Cost for the cab is ~70 pesos (~ $14 USD) plus 0.50 per bag.

Accessibility: there are no stairs entering the hotel. Rooms are on several levels. There is an elevator that carries guests to any of the upper floors. Some bathrooms have grab bars. Those in wheelchairs should be able to be easily accommodated. Just be sure to specify what type of accommodation is needed at the time of booking

Check in was fast and efficient. We arrived at approximately 1130 and were informed that check in was not until 1400. The desk clerk suggested that we leave our bags and relax in the sun room. Just as we were settling in, the clerk found us and told us one of our two rooms were available.

Rooms: Rooms are a nice size with a dresser, work table and office type chair for those inclined to work on the computer (free WiFi is provided in all guests rooms, and in the business center on the first floor). Bathrooms are large and are outfitted with quality toiletries. The rooms were clean and well maintained though it was incredibly hot. Luckily one window opened so we could let in some fresh cool air. Ladies should plan on a light weight sleeper. Be sure to pull the sun block shades from November to March as it is spring and summer in the Southern Hemisphere. During this time the sun comes up at approximately 0400 and does not set until about 2200.

The views of the channel from the many large windows was lovely. There is a common area/Florida room facing the channel where guests go to relax and enjoy the view. The staff aimed to please, and quickly responded to requests for assistance.

The restaurant is situated in a pleasant area with large windows that provided a great view of the channel. We only ate breakfast at the hotel restaurant. It was a buffet with a selection of cold breakfast items and juices, as well as scrambled eggs and bacon on a steam table. All of the food was quite acceptable except perhaps the bread. When toasted it completely dried out to the point that one bite resulted in the bread shattering into pieces.

Several quibbles with the hotel:
1. There are no irons in the rooms and there are none available from the front desk. While they did offer to send the items out to be ironed, they would not have returned until after we left the next day. It is disappointing that such a highly rated hotel would not have such a basic service.
2. They were not able to cash traveler checks.

If you are going to Ushuaia for any reason the Los Cauquense Resort is a lovely spot to relax and enjoy the ambiance of the city at the “Fin del Monde”.

Mrs-K-albany
Thank you so much for such a lovely and through out review.
It is always nice to hear back from our guest specially when the reviews are so helpful to other visitors as well.
I´m sorry we were not able to accommodate your request for the iron, it goes with Health & Safety regulations I´m afraid.
And with regards to the Travel Checks, it´s unfortunately a legal limitation - we have, in Argentina, a very strict control over money exchange regulations.
I hope these inconvenient s did not opaque you experience with us.
Thank you again for taking the time to share your visit and for staying with us while in Ushuaia.
