“More a snowfield, but great view”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

According to our taxi-driver this was a nice glacier about 20 years ago. Today it seems the hotel "Glaciar Martial" is bigger then the glacier itself. Nevertheless it is a nice stroll up the mountain and one of the paths leads to a Mirador over Ushuaia.
On not-so-windy days it is a nice picnic place.

“Trail Worth Taking”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 23, 2013

The Martial Glacier is about 5 miles from Ushuaia; uphill and winding. The taxi leaves you at a staging area that has a few small "tea houses", a parking lot, and -- most important -- the lower end of the chair-lift. This lift is used in the winter by skiers, and in the summer by hikers from 10 am to 3:45 pm. The lift takes you part way up the mountain, and from there you begin hiking to the glacier. Though you could walk the entire distance, the lift ride itself ($13/person round-trip) is quite scenic and peaceful. Once off the lift, we began hiking higher up the mountain on one of the trails -- returning later via a different trail. The mountain is very steep. The trail is an ad-hoc affair of loose rock and gravel, so it is fine in some places, non-existent in other places, and slippery mud mixed with snow/ice in other places. Of course, at this time of year, the snow and ice all around is melting so you hike on very wet ground and constantly cross shallow streams. The Martial Glacier is not dramatic compared to others we have seen in Alaska and Canada, but it is special in its own right. It is shaped like a bowl, and has several branches.

The weather was beautiful -- no rain, and about 45F. From high on the mountain, surrounded by the white snow and ice, you look down on Ushuaia as though you were a bird flying overhead. The view of all the surrounding mountains is likewise especially wonderful. We hiked on the mountain for hours, returned to the upper end of the chair-lift, rode the lift down to the staging area, and hailed another taxi to take us to the center of town ($10).

“Nice area to hike, a lot cheaper than the national park”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

We took a taxi to the bottom of the chairlift which cost AR$37 going there and AR$44 on the way back. There is no entrance fee for the area, just AR$65 if you want to take the chairlift up and back (15min each way, but walking takes about the same amount of time). From the top of the chairlift there are three trails: one to a viewpoint over Ushuaia (30min, easy) and two to the glacier (more difficult, 45min to an hour). Great scenery, great views. Have tea at the La Cabaña tea house afterwards!

“Worth the walk! Great view!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2013

he Martial Glacier is very beautiful! The mountains still have snow in summer! It's worth the effort to climb to the top and enjoy the view. You can see Ushuaia the top of Glacier. You will walk through the snow in midsummer, is awesome!

“Fun and active day trip”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2013

The glacier is work a visit. You can go by taxi and chairlift or hike from town. The actually glacier is a very long, difficult hike, the the area around it where you go with the chairlift is beautiful and you can do as little or as much hiking as you want.
