I was looking for things to do while awaiting my boat to Antarctica and found this museum. Spent more time in it than I expected. It is an old prison, the reason Ushuaia exists, converted to a museum. Each wing contains a different aspect of history. I found it very interesting and an enjoyable afternoon, much more so than the other museums in town.

I spent an entire morning in the museum and could have stayed longer.
There is an enormous amount to see, covering to original penal settlement and gaol, maritime history, art, and of course antarctic exploration.
Definitely worth a visit.

To be very honest, there was nothing to dislike in the whole museum complex. The guides there were most informative and explained it all in great detail. The wrecks all had very clear and detailed leaflets outlining why and how they sank or were wrecked, adding to the value of the pictures. How the Prisoners survived their sentences, if at all, is a miracle and a clear indication of their resolve to get out alive at the end of their sentence. Sadly a lot did not make it due to the harsh and cruel conditions and treatment meted out to them.

Spent a good afternoon in this Museum but there were so many different parts couldn't get round them all. The ticket is actually valid for 24 hours, I believe, so if you have the time might be worth going one afternoon then again the following morning to make the most of it. The museum is in the former prison and has lots of information on prison life, the prisoners, the founding of the colony. However there are also art exhibitions, information and models of ships used in the area, information about Antarctic exhibitions, animals, things about other prisons and much more. A very informative afternoon but almost too much to take in, in the time we had.

Larger, more varied and more interesting than anticipated, this museum requires a walk up a daunting hill, but is worth it! Lots of history!
