“Recent history and great museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 31, 2012

One of the halls is kept as it was in 1947 when the prision was shut down. You can feel the cold and the loneliness of those men. The window in the main hall (where prisioners ate) is big anough that you can see the mountains and the sky, through the iron bars. There are other halls with a resular arts museum, which you can skip and enjoy the outside. To me it was the best attraction in Ushuaia and relates to the second best, the Train to the End of the World, used by the same prisioners to cut trees.

“Better display than Alcatraz!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 23, 2012

No, the jail isn't as imposing and famous as Alcatraz, but I really appreciated the displays and stories of various prisoners the jail depicts. The jail is laid out like a wheel with the "spokes" being long blocks of cells and the "hub" in the center where now there is a shop and café. It appears that the main cell block where the displays are has been refurbished somewhat, but if you go into one of the other cell blocks, you can see what the conditions were really like. A don't miss in Ushuaia.

A fascinating insight into the early years of the building which was combined with other interesting features, including art exhibits.

“Woderful models of ships”

Really brought it home to me how difficult and dangerous it was for sailors so many years ago. They achieved so much.
