“Beautiful Rooms Above the Lake”
Reviewed April 28, 2013

High standard, cosy room, with veranda overlooking the lake, great value for money. We booked this at booking.com at a very good rate (considering the generally very high prices in Argentina). Great place to explore the area and enjoy the lake and forest. Hotel restaurant was poor.

Room Tip: ask for a room with veranda. while having a great ambience, the restaurant was gastronomically not a...

Dear guest
Thank you for your comments. My only regret is that you didn't explained more descriptively you reason to choose the word "poor" for our restaurant. It would allowed us to understand if something went wrong or why you think it's not at the same level of the rest. This is bemusing. Anyway, we're glad to see you enjoyed your visit to Kaiken and the surrounding area (known as the Heart of Tierra del Fuego). Your remarks surely will help others to know it a little more. Cheers.

We took an exterior cabin, though somewhat rustic, it was quite comfortable after a day of guanacos, birds, dirt roads. All receptionists fluent in English, friendly and helpful. Manager and owner provide a wealth of information about history, scenery, local things to do, bird book loan in house. Lovely view of lake, mts, sunset. Setting is beautiful and easy to find from Ruta 3 a few km south of Tolhuin. Restaurant a bit above average, breakfast lacked protein, but was adequate. For outdoor focused people wanting lodging without crowds, this is ideal.

Room Tip: Standard room has TV. Exterior cabins have basic accommodations.

Dear guest
Thank for your comments! It shows that you enjoyed your trip and also your stay in Hosteria Kaiken.

The kind of room you stayed in, the Del Lago ("lakeside") rooms are, efectively, a bit rustic. These are the preferred choice for most of our guests actually! But the rooms in the main building are completely different, much more refined (and cost a bit more also). These are options we have to please our guests' different needs and tastes.
We'll keep in mind your comment about the breakfast.
We hope to see you again sometime, and that you recommend us to your contacts. Thanks again!
Warm regards

We really liked this place. So peaceful at night and stunning views. The owners who live in BA were delightful and the english speaking receptionist could not have been more helpful eg with info for my husband who wanted to fish locally. We thought the breakfast and evening meals were good. The cabana had all we needed. Only negatives were a tepid welcome from the receptionist on duty when we arrived (no info was provided maybe due to lang barrier and the cabana simply pointed out to us). also our first night in the resto they said we could not sit by the window to enjoy the view as the tables were all for 4, yet straight afterwards 2 couples simply went and sat there without asking! There was no plug so we could not use the bath but apparently guests regularly steal anything which isn't nailed down. We are really glad we came here rather than tolhuin itself and wished we had stayed longer to enjoy the local walks. Highly recommend this place.

A great view. There are several places around to visit. A good restaurant, a few meals but well done, at affordable prices. Rooms are not very silent. No TV on the rooms. (TV is in a common place). There is a nice lounge for drinking a coffee or some Martini. A couple of days would be fine. But... I think a car is needed to know in depth the places around

Room Tip: In the top (1st) floor, in front of the lake, with balcony. Don't take rooms near the common pla...

Thank you for your helpful review!
It's a company policy not to have TV in the rooms, as adviced in our website.
Regarding the sound of the TV that occasionally may be heard in the upstairs room next to the bar, we're working on the subject to avoid this form happening again. We're sorry, our aim is to make all guests have a nice stay.
We totally agree with you: a car is a must to know in depth the Heart of Tierra del Fuego!!

we booked a cabana months in advance to be independent and avoid noisy families and we got a standard room when arriving the same evening without prior notification. It ended up being a nosiy stay with screaming children around. The restaurant offered a limited selection of courses out of the many in the menu, because it was the day before new year and we were told the kitchen was busy....the only steak they had, we got it cold as it was taken out of the fridge...not acceptable by a supposed high level restaurant

We offered our apologies for the inconvenient with your cabana room in time. It was not available because there was a problem with the heating that could not be repaired that day. In exchange, you were given an upgrade, a much better room, free of charge. We apologize again for this.

As you said, the restaurant offered a limited selection of courses on the 30th of December. Waiters warned of this to all customers before they made their selection. We also apologize if your choice was not as hot as you wanted it to be. However, we would have had no problem in heating it up. A shame you didn't tell us at the time...

What is unacceptable is a passenger that left the hotel refusing to pay the bill on the basis of such weak arguments, throwing a couple of bills over the counter (that didn't cover a third of the expenses) to a bemused receptionist that was doing her best to serve you.

Hosteria Kaiken is a lovely small hotel right on the shore of Lago Fagnano, the southernmost lake in the world. The hotel consists of a main building with eight hotel rooms, some with jacuzzi, and five detached cottages, all equipped with giant floor-to-ceiling windows facing the lake. The lake views are mesmerizing! You will not want to leave your room!

The hotel and cottages are beautifully built and very well maintained. Everything is sparkling clean and new. The cottage light wooden interior makes you feel warm, especially when it is cold outside. The cottages are very effectively heated so that you will not feel cold in Tierra Del Fuego.

The steaks and wine we had in the evening in the hotel restaurant were totally superb. In the morning, we were given a full breakfast consisting of eggs, ham, toast, orange juice, tea and coffee. Everything was delicious.

The hotel staff deserves a special mention for their friendliness and desire to make your stay at Kaiken as enjoyable as possible. Thank you ladies, you made our stay at Kaiken very pleasant and we want to come back!
