We did this trek with Guias del Sur (www.gdspatagonia.com.ar) email: guiasdelsur@hotmail.com.ar
Excellent choice! It is a demanding 12 hours trek: 7 hs to the summit of 1.400 mts thru forest, rock, ice (walking on ice, they provide crampons, piolet, hamlet) and 5 hs back. If you want you can do it in 2 days for a more "relaxed" climb, No need technical experience, but it can get challenge on the ice and some rock climbing.
Impressive views of all the mountain ranges, the Fagnano lake, the Beagle channel.
Jeremias and Sebastian, the owners of Guias del Sur are really experienced mountaing guides. We also did with them Travesia Roy, a 8hs trek, climbing Cerro del Medio and cerro Roy for excellent views.

I also climbed Cerro Alvear with Compania de Guias de Patagonia. Luis looked after everything for us, all we had to do was turn up bright and early ready to climb. The last section is where you really need the harness, ropes and ice axes and was certainly the best part of the day for me. If you do the one day up and down, there is a fun rush back down, descending before dark. Definitely recommend this climb for anyone who hasn't climbed before but would like to give it a go.

If you are looking for a little adventure and have never been mountaineering, this will get you hooked!!! We weren't planning to climb a mountain, but we stumbled on Cerro Alvear and the ascension was the best thing we did all holiday.

Cerro Alvear is the tallest mountain in the area. The ascension up the mountain itself is not overly technical, but still physically challenging - you need to be reasonably fit as you need to be able to ascend and descend by nightfall (unless you plan on camping overnight). The final part to the summit is the most technical and you will need a guide if you are a beginner.

Needless to say, reaching the summit feels great, but for me the best part was experiencing the complete quiet of the mountain. There are such varied landscapes and views along the way - the valley you cross at the beginning of the climb was once a river that has now been destroyed by the beavers in the area - amazing to see. And once you are higher up, you have amazing views of the entire mountain range and not a single person in sight for miles.

BUT you will need proper equipment and a guide. As far as I know, the only agent that offered this activity in Ushuaia was Compagnia de Guias de Patagonia. Our guide Luis was fantastic and so knowledgeable about the area (not to mention climbing and safety). Both the climb and Luis are highly recommended!
