If you like (or love) penguins, this is a must. You take a quick boat ride to the island where there are thousands of penguins. Your guide takes you for a hike (actually a slow walk so you don't scare the birds) around part of the island where you see the penguins eating, sleeping, swimming, walking, and... A great, great trip.

This tour us a combination bus and boat excursion. The bus portion is a total of 3 hours (1.5 in each direction)...almost two on a bumpy dirt road. This uncomfortable portion is interrupted by a stop to sle and photograph trees which have been deformed by the wind. Not sure why this stop is included at all...it was too quick to be very useful and we had taken the trip to see birds, not trees.

The second stop is a visit to an aquatic animal museum which is a very interesting exhibition of the bones of these animals on display and explained by a guide (an intern syudying the subject). This was a nice interlude and shows artifacts taken from carcasses of animals which have died through natural means. This includes penguins do it was more pertinent to the goal of our visit. (If this doesn't hold any interest a coffee spot nearby is offered as an option.). The stop here is short do there is no opportunity to look at individual exhibits on ones own.

After this a smallish boat is used to carry passengers to a nearby island to view penguins. This is the interesting part of the tour as the island is covered with penguins...two species. They are not overly disturbed by human presence so one can see them very well and up close. Unfortunately only about an hour us devoted to this activity before one is ferried back to the cramped bus for the return bus trip.

Some tips...check to make sure both species are in the island...the magelenic species (the largest population) leave the island for six months. Also bring a snack for the trip back. And bring warm clothing as the wind can be nippy.

Overall I loved seeing the penguins...especially so close...but you have to love them to endure the trip there and back to see them.

Imagine walking on an island surrounded by hundreds of penguins! Sounds pretty awesome, right? The Penguin Rookery Visit with Pira Tour was easily one of the best experiences I have ever had. After a scenic bus ride and a short boat ride, you have about an hour to walk around the island, take pictures, and watch the funny little birds interact with each other. We were there in January and were able to see baby penguins waddle around. Absolutely fantastic--I highly recommend it!

What an amazing experience, even the bumpy hour and a half mininus drive was worth it, great scenery. Found the museum very interesting too. But the best was yet to come! After a short boat ride out to the island we were close up to the penguins which was one of the highlights of our whole trip, especially as we got to see three King penguins too. To be so close up to the penguins was amazing, they really are so cute. Our guide was very knowledgeable and made our trip even more memorable. If you are visiting Ushuaia you must take this tour. We were on a cruise which stopped at Ushuaia and after talking to other guests on the ship this appeared to be the best pengiun trip available throughtout the cruise.
