We spent a day doing numerous things including visiting the Penguin rookery (you go there on a zodiac boat and stay on it while the boat goes right to the shore) as well as going hiking on nearby islands. There were literally hundreds of penguins - magellans and gentoos were the two predominant types but there was also one lone King penguin who had lost his way from his group and ended up on the island with the others. We watched these quirky birds for nearly an hour as they played, fished for food, swam and socialized.

We were fortunate to tie into a visit to the penguin Nookery during a cruise ship stop in Ushuaia. Our guide Santy was very knowledgable and entertaining at the same time. He readily answered the many questions from our group . While the weather her was cold and wet it proved to be ideal penguin weather. I have never seen so many animals in such close proximity. The unique aspect was that we were the only humans with the penguins on the island. If you go to Ushuaia make sure you do this tour!

This tour is a must. Pira Tour arranges it very professionally. The price(450 pesos) is ok for international standards. Now, the experience to be right in the middle of thousand of penguins and their nests is up to each person. For me it was fantastic.

The Pira Tour trip to the penguin rookery is the absolute best of the lot in Ushuaia. I had gone on a penguin tour boat several years ago, and it only stopped at the island for us to look at the penguins, who came up to the boat. This trip, I was planning for a group of six friends so was adamant that we get to see the penguins up close. Pira Tour actually lets you get off the boat and walk on the island among the penguins. We got to see penguins nesting and even a few babies, as well as some mating going on. The guide was very informative.

The trip starts with an hour-and-a-half van ride to Estancia Harburton, with a couple of stops along the way to take pictures of some very spectacular scenery. At Harburton, we boarded a boat for the rookery and spent about an hour on the island. Awesome. Then the boat returned to Harburton, where we had a tour of the marine mammal museum, then returned to Ushuaia by van. I highly recommend this particular tour for the penguin rookery.

If you're interested in a tour of Harburton itself, you'll need to find a different tour.

This is a great half-day outing from Ushuaia. Our tour guide Santiago (Santi) was really funny, knowledgeable and conducted the tour in both Spanish & English. The drive out to Haberton Estancia was scenic and the chance to spend an hour on the island walking within a few feet of the penguins is not to be missed! We saw three different species - Magellenic, Gentoo and a solo King penguin! The penguins were sitting on their nests and we even got to see two newly hatched chicks. Everyone in our group really loved this excursion - well worth the time and money.
