Loved the people and ambience of this unique place. They were very helpful regarding where to eat and arranging activities in the local area. Great breakfasts especially if you have a sweet tooth. The foyer makes this place! The rooms were clean and comfortable. It was great to leave some luggage here while we went trekking for a week. This was no problem to the staff. Thank you!!!

This hotel is very cosy with gorgeous stylish rooms, located in small wooden houses that make you feel like being at home. Food is delicious and you can book a trip directly at the reception. The only downside is the location, up on the hill, but it does offer nice views and the hotel sends out a free taxi to pick you up in the town after 8pm.

A bit uphill with respect to the center of town, but a a reasonable walking distance (the hosts offer a free shuttle service, in any case). Wandering around, you can see quite a number of antique object, which add to the charme of the place, The best part is breakfast, the best we had in Patagonia!

We loved the La Cantera hotel. It sits high on the hill and the views are priceless. Everyone who works there went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. We had dinner there one night after a full day on the Glacier boat and the food was fantastic. We really thought the personal shuttle from 8:00 p.m. till 12:00 was a way out of the box service. We are sorry we only spent two nights at La Cantera and El Calafate. This is a very comfortable place to stay.

Room Tip: We stayed in the most upper part of the hotel facing the lake and the mountains. This is the way to...

We loved this hotel set high up from the town and offering spacious, simply decorated and very comfortable accommodation. The lack of air circulation at night proved a bit of an issue, you can't keep the windows open as they are at ground level and there is no fan or air con. However, we did enjoy sitting out on the deck in the late afternoon sun.

The evening meal was a complete surprise; very sensibly priced to encourage you to eat in, then a delightful three course meal that would rival many served in city restaurants. The resident chef explained his appetisers and matched wines to each course.

The steep steps were a bit of a difficulty with our heavy bags, then not every one travels as heavily as I do. Bathroom was large and the spa bath lovely and deep. I was very hot each night as the hotel did not have a lighter blanket to offer to replace the ample duvet. This may be worth asking about if you don't feel the cold; the nights we experienced are quite mild.

Perfect location for the glacier tours, packed lunches were generous.

Everything was clean and working. Within close walking distance to town. The staff were friendly and th food was good. It's not close to the glacier, but non of the other hotels are either.
The free WiFi in the room works well. The TV has only one English chanel.

Room Tip: All rooms face to the lake. The lower rooms are on street level, but you need to climb steps to the...

We planned two nights at the Esplendor in El Calafate then three in El Chalten but had to come back to El Calafate for the last night due to one of the many changes in Aerolineas Argentina flights we had. Rooms on sale at the Esplendor had almost doubled (to over £200) from when we first booked so with some trepidation we booked La Cantera at £50 per room instead. What a bargain. The staff could not have been pleasanter and our room and the public area were comfortable with a view of a lake. It may not have had the impressive proportions and designer feel of the Esplendor and breakfast was not quite as good but the people were much nicer and the guest rooms are about the same size. An added bonus was dinner - some of the best food we had in Argentina with lovely snacks with our drinks before, although not as good value as the rooms. Highly recommended. And when you are booking hotels in Argentina watch out for enormous ups and downs in prices (particualrly in Patagonia) and greater differences between booking sites than usual - there seemed to be quite a lot of "trying it on" going on.
