“Agustin is AMAZING!”
Reviewed January 13, 2013

Agustin, their amazing chef, cooked my family a three course meal that was beyond delightful! He trained in Spain but is his own man, always inventing new flavors. I especially enjoyed his basil sorbet. He truly made us feel welcome and found the perfect wines to pair with our food. He even showed us his little herb garden, unheard of in Patagonia. Also, we have to mention Celeste, who managed the front desk. She was very sweet and accomodating. The people of La Cantera are what make this hotel such a great find and a delight to come home to after a trek on the glaciers! We are the Bucsan family and visited at the end of December 2012, a beautiful time to visit El Calafate and La Cantera.

My family and I stayed here three nights recently. Comfortable, clean, adequate, nothing elegant or exceptional or "high end." The room was too hot (because it was unseasonably warm) and we tried to turn off the towel warmer (which contributed to the room heat) but couldn't because it would spray water. So we just made sure to shut the bathroom door. This added to the charm. Breakfast is good. We ate there one evening, Christmas Eve, when the chef, Augustine, knocked himself out and made a fabulous gourmet multi-course meal. He prepared and served it -- a true one-man production. It's a long walk to town (20 mins) for dinner but they do have a free shuttle, which worked well.

Very good hotel, with a very friendly and helpful staff... they help you setting up the tours, explaning how they works and giving a excellent description of them.

They have a very good chef cooking the dinner menu and its a must do to have dinner there at least one time duringyour stay!

They also have a good selection of dvds to watch, the only let down is that the wifi is not very stable in th Mountain Views rooms...

Everything about this hotel was great, except weirdly for the awful pillows. Lumpy little things. The food was fantastic, and Jesus the chef really outdid himself, accommodating my party's gluten allergies and special requests.

We loved that it was a small hotel, with staff who really cared. Excellent English spoken by the front desk staff, and great help with arranging a trek to the glacier.

Stay here, stay in for dinner, bring your own pillow?

I chose this hotel because one review read the staff was very helpful and capable. They did not disappoint me. Each email was answered promptly in a positive way. The only catch is contacting them directly, (recepcioncalafate@hotellacantera.com), not through the email listed in their web page.

My trip was short of time and we wanted to do it all. Our flight was to arrive at 1PM, too late to join a tour to Glacier Perito Moreno. So Dario arranged for a private transfer. Cesar picked us up at airport and took us directly to the Glacier; he waited for us and then returned us to the hotel. Our flight was late so it was good I had requested a lunch box which was waiting for us in the car.
What a contrast from El Calafate, sunny but always windy, to the Glaciar area, which was very windy cold and SNOWING!

On our way through town, we saw La Tablita restaurant, mentioned we wanted to eat there, Cesar promptly asked Celeste to make us a reservation. I am glad he did, the restaurant was packed! Next day we traveled and stayed one night at La Estancia Cristina. It was nice of Georgina to store our luggage; we were to come back for our last night in town.

Our room was clean and pleasant with two double beds, a sitting area and great views of Lake Argentino. Bathroom had full size bathtub with plenty of hot water. I could always connect my iPad to the internet in the lobby or in my room. We were delighted breakfast started at 6 am, gave us a chance to eat before our tour pick up at 7 am. This place is the excellent base for exploring Patagonia.

Celeste, Georgina, Dario y Cesar muchas gracias!!!

Although our room was OUTside the main building, the room was excellent. Lots of amenties in the room, a very good bed, a flat TV (have not turned it on, lots of helpful advise.
Location disadvantage - the hotel is located on a hill above town, it takes about 15 minutes to walk it up. On the second day, it is not fun anymore (we are good walkers). For a reference, El Calafate town activity is along Libertador Avenue.
Th hotel staff service was very good, English was understood.
As a service, after 8 PM (although it is getting dark around only at 10 PM), the hotel provides a FREE taxi ride to town and back to the hotel (last one at midnight).
Breakfast had a great variety and was served from 6 AM till 10 AM.
Inspite the distance, we enjoyed the stay.

The service is very warm and inviting. The staff really seems to care and take the extra step. It offers a wonderful value and is what it claims to be. Do not expect a Hilton, but a hotel that more fits with the area that it is located in. Rooms are of reasonable size and equip well. Beds have seen better days, but are not in need of immediate replacement in either of our two rooms. Breakfast is fine, but limited in the traditional choices, at least for North Americans. Two kinds of scramble eggs make up the hot offerings, with a number of cold options and many sweets.the fruit salad is nice and fresh fruit. You will not go hungry, but do not expect an overwhelming selection.

Please note that you MUST buy the same room type for both otherwise you will find yourself in two different buildings. Not far from each other, but not acceptable for travel with children. They have adjoins rooms for families.

The wifi is free but works only at times in the rooms and our room was close to the signal output. Rai and wind tend to affect it. Works well in lobby. Safe is nice to have but to small for iPads. The front desk is happy to hold this for you when you are out and about.

The hotel offers dinner with limited choices and you need to select the Mai. Course I advance. You need to reserve, though this can be done the same evening. Food was good.

The hotel offers lunch sandwiches for your full day trips. They kindly put it in a backpack for you. Each order includes two sandwiches so unless you are the biggest eater one order for two people is perfect.

Hotel provides a free shuttle to/for the hotel from 8 pm until midnight. Easy downhill walk to toe approx 5 min. We tended to walk to town and had the restaurant call the hotel to arrange the pickup which came quickly each time.

Do laundry I town (hotel makes suggestions) opposed to the hotel as it is much less expensive.

Room Tip: Note that different room types are in different buildings.
