“excellent hotel, great food”

We stayed at this hotel for 3 nights. We didn't have a lake view room but still could see part of the lake from our room. This place has a cabin feel with modern touches. The rooms were spacious, well decorated. Nice bathroom and amenities. Only complaint is that the cleaning products they use are so strong! They have a nice aroma (not like a cleaning product), very floral, but it's a strong smell. Our heater was broken the first night and we were very hot (couldn't turn it down), but it was fixed. There are nice lounge chairs outside with good views. The breakfast was wonderful, cakes, breads, eggs, crepes, fruits, mimosas etc. They offer a free shuttle to town from 8pm-midnight. This is very convenient for going to dinner. All the restaurants know La Cantera, so when you're done with your meal, you just ask them to give the hotel a call and they'll send the shuttle for you. I'd highly recommend the 3 course dinner at the hotel. The chef was wonderful and we had one of our best meals in our 2 wk trip there. I'm vegetarian and had eaten a lot of very bland, boring pasta dishes in Argentina. i asked the chef if she could try to make it spicy and boy did he! In addition to the 3 courses (all excellent), he gave us a welcome cocktail (gin and tonic), small bites (bread with dips), and a delicious sorbet to cleanse the palette at the end. Overall an excellent meal! And for 120 pesos, it was a good price for how much food we had. We also bought the packed lunched from the hotel for our Big Ice excursion. We each got a meal, but you should probably share one meal among 2 people b/c the portions are generous (2 sandwiches, 2 drinks, etc). Overall a great hotel and experience.

The hotel looks like it belongs in an Alpine Village. It's a wonderful base for exploring lakes, mountains and glaciers. You can have a drink on the large deck and watch the sunsets.

The staff was helpful from check-in to check-out. There is a resident chef who prepares wonderful food - but you have to know to book ahead. He creates special cocktails and appetizers to start the dinners.

The hotel has added a transportation service to get guests to and from town during the dinner hour. Taxies aren't expensive, but if you decide to hoof it, it is a good walk.

El Calafate is a windy area, and the hotel is on a unpaved road. There is a lot of dust moving around. If you have issues with dust, stay closer to the town center.

I loved this hotel. I loved the decor in the rooms and the shared spaces. The bathrooms are much nicer than I'd anticipated. There is a living room type setting in the lobby area that is attractive and comfortable. The staff was very helpful and nice. I'd been concerned we hadn't booked our trip to Perito Moreno Glacier ahead of time, and they told us exactly what to do to accomplish it easily. The views from the rooms and deck were lovely (we took a late afternoon cappuccino on the deck outside ... wonderful!) Personally, I liked being up out of the town -- which I found to be crowded, noisy, and without a lot of charm. As others have said, breakfasts were great. But my favorite aspect -- we had two of the best dinners I've ever had in my life there. We ate dinner there early in the week, and it was marvelous. We made a reservation for the night we came back to El Calafate to catch our fight, and it was superb and then some! When I came back to the States, I tried to make the stew we'd eaten there -- it was that good. Augustine, the chef, is both the waiter and the cook, and comes to the table with great descriptions of the food he's prepared. Such fun! He's so into it. The lentil soup is his mother's recipe, the chocolate dessert (which I am still dreaming about and salivating over, and I'm not even a chocoholic!) is from an old French cookbook and so on. Oh my. Even if you don't stay here, make sure you visit for dinner! I may have to go back to Patagonia for another of Augustine's meals. I do agree that the temperature inside the hotel is hot ... heh, wear a short sleeved shirt to the common spaces and you'll be fine! And maybe they'll turn it down a little when they see all these reviews!

Room Tip: We stayed in two different rooms, one adjacent to the lobby and one on a lower level. Both were att...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at La Cantera. Our flight had a two hour delay so we didn't get to the hotel until 10:30. Celeste, our receptionist, greeted us as we got out of our car. Check in was extremely quick. We asked her to make reservations for two restaurants that were recommended by our guide and we never checked back to make sure that we were able to get them but when we showed up, our reservations were there. The breakfasts were very elaborate - two kinds of eggs, all sorts of meats, breads, cheeses, juice, etc.

The only complaint that I had was that the rooms were overheated. However, we've since found out - having been in 4 hotels now in Argentina, that they all tend to be overheated. So, opening up the balcony door solved that problem.

This hotel is conveniently located part way up the mountain but only a 10 minute walk into the town.

My rating of this hotel is primarily based on the location and the fact that the hotel was so hot, we could barely stand it. I traveled with another couple who had the same problem in their room. Upon informing the front desk, we were told that the entire hotel was on one thermostat and there was no way to adjust it. Also, the location of the hotel was not the best. It was not withing walking distance of town and the surrounding houses and yards were not nice and there was quite a bit of trash around. What I liked about this hotel was the very nice staff...willing to accomodate and be helpful (with the exception of the heating problem) and a great buffet breakfast.

We stayed here one night. The restaurant was solid and the lodge where it'd located (along with main counter, etc) was very nice and appropriate for a town like El Calafate. It is not located downtown so walking down to the main drag would be a challenge. Our room was trying hard to be upscale but kind of split the difference on trying to be luxury/boutique/lodge and landed in what felt like a upscale late 80's ritz room with wooden walls. Felt dated not a "super cool" boutique but props for trying. Bathroom/shower was very good. Good beds.

I booked La Cantera as I found difficulty finding availability in El Calafate in January. It was an average hotel, we had a leak in our bathroom which led to a damp smell. This was not rectified during our stay despite informing reception. Generally however the hotel was not too bad, free internet available for guests, ok choice for breakfast, reception was always staffed. I thought it was overpriced compared to other places we stayed in Argentina and it certainly wasn't the best. In our opinion would suit families who need a base in the area.
