Hosteria los Hielos
Ranked #34 of 70 Hotels in El Calafate
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 15, 2010

We spent three nights at Los Hielos while in El Calafate and enjoyed it immensely. It is small, quiet, a little out of the way (a good thing in El Calafate), clean and comfortable. The rooms were excellent, with a nice view of the water (including flamingos!) and the staff very helpful. In addition, it is a great base for visits to the Perito Moreno glacier and Estancia Cristina (both of which are extraordinary experiences), especially because it is the last, or one of the last, stops for the buses and vans headed out of town. Being the first stop on the way back makes a real difference when coming back to town after a long day of trekking or exploring. Our only complaint with the hotel was the food. Breakfast was fine--breads, pastries, cereal, fruit, etc.---but the lunchboxes were only adequate and dinner not very good. But, don't come to Los Hielos to eat (there are several surprisingly good restaurants in the center of town, only a 5-8 minute cab ride); come for the quiet and comfort.

Just spent 3 nights at Los Hielos and I would certainly recommend this hotel - it is located slightly out of town (about 40 minute walk along the lake) but, as other have said before, the setting / view is excellent, cabs are easy to arrange and the big benefit is being the last to be picked up and the first to be dropped off for all the tours that depart El Calafate.

In terms of the hotel itself, there are 12 rooms all of which face the lake - the rooms are nice with great big windows looking out over the lake. There is also a small jacuzzi & sauna (which have to be booked in the morning if you want to use them in the evening) and a small restaurant / bar area.

There is not a lot else to the hotel but, in my opinion, what really sets this hotel apart is the service. When we were trying to arrange our trip to El Calafate we found it very hard to decide exactly what trips to do, what they all included etc etc and we wanted to get the trips booked ahead of arriving as we only really had 2.5 days. I emailed a number of hotels to enquire about availability and also some of the details about the trips and Los Hielos were by far the most responsive and helpful and, when it came to booking the trips, they made all the arrangements for us. My reason for mentioning this is because a friend of mine went to El Calafate a few months ago and her hotel assured her they had booked the Big Ice, but when she arrived no reservation had been made and there was no further availability - I have also read similar reviews on other hotels in El Calafate. This was not the case with Los Hielos.

The only reasons for not giving the hotel 5 stars is that it is a little on the pricey side (but so is most of El Calafate I think) and also it would be nice if you didn't have to book the spa in the morning to use in the evening (but, for a small hotel, I guess this just makes economic sense).

In summary, good hotel, excellent service, little bit out of town but that shouldn't put you off as it has its advantages as well.

My husband and I stayed at Hosteria los Hielos in early December. The hotel is new and gorgeous, right on the shore of one of the lakes. The building is constructed like an inn, with lots of stone and wood work, and massive windows to see the lake and wildlife. Our room was spotless and the bathroom was modern with a jet tub. We had a huge window and could see all type of birds, including flamingos!, from our room. The hotel is 2km outside town, and really would be a pleasant walk. The taxis are very easy to get from the hotel desk are are about 13 pesos.
But the thing that really stands out about this hotel is the outstanding customer service! Unfortunately I arrived in El Calafate from Ushuaia already very ill. After growing increasingly sick, my husband had to get a doctor called for me. Natalie at the hotel's front desk was very helpful in getting a doctor quickly to the room. Natalie helped my husband locate a pharmacy for me. She also helped canceled (sadly) our mini-trek glacier tour and get refund details. When I was finally able to get out of bed, Natalie called all around to find a tour company that could get us to the glacier balacony to at least SEE the glacier before we had to leave.
I would recommend this hotel based on its comfort and style, but I have to give it 5 stars based on the outstanding personal service we received.

We spent two nights here and could not have been more satisfied. We booked through the hotel and paid about $150 US.

As others have highlighted, it's a great location for getting picked up for the glacier. It's a little bit outside of the downtown, but cabs come quickly when called, and the cost is minimal ($4 US).

The real benefit of staying at this hotel is the incredibly helpful staff. You name it, from arranging tourist activities to calling cabs to making dinner reservations they jump at every request. They even helped us track down some lost luggage while we were out on our mini-trek on the glacier.

The rooms are a little sparse, but clean and big. The bathrooms are more than adequate as well. There is a small restaurant which serves a free breakfast each morning and the hotel has free wireless.

The location is very peaceful and quite and the view of the lake is unbeatable. Definitely recommend it.

We stayed for two nights in this hotel when visiting Periot Moreno. This hotel is the seconc closest to the glacier. This is of benefit when the bus picks you up the morning. Instead of making a tour to all the other hotels to pick people up, you just more or less straight to the glacier.

The hotel itself was perfectly nice. Our room was spacious and had a fantastic view of the lake. They made us some nice packed lunches when we went our for the day.

Overall, this hotel is good. The reason why it doesn't get five stars is the price. We found $160 per night a little steep. But don't be fooled: all of El Calafate is essentially a rip off. In this context, this hotel is ok.

Our group of 3 had a wonderful stay at Hoesteria Los Hielos. Its a little far from town but its a very nice stay. The Front Desk workers help with calling a taxi and giving info on the excursions. Rooms and the bathrooms were very clean and the breakfast was good.

For the younger crowd I truly recommend the Big Ice excursion - the whole excursion is from 9-4:30pm (there's a lot of hiking/walking, so be very very prepared for that). The Big Ice experience is by far something no words can describe the scenery when you're on the glacier its just breath taking. Before I went I read a lot of forums regarding what to pack, since it was the summer/spring time when we went the weather was not as cold. We rented boots and jackets, which worked out perfectly because we didn't have to pack bulky clothes. You have to pack a lunch because you'll have lunch on the glacier. I suggest you make sandwiches from the breakfast the hotel offers or you can pack empandas.

For those who wants a sample of the Big Ice the Minitrekking is also very good. Its not as long and not as strenuous its good for the elderly.

Just an FYI - there's a lot of stray dogs in town, but don't be worry about them they don't bother ppl unless you start giving them food or petting them.

What a fabulous place! I travel for work and fun frequently, and I have never had as helpful service as I had from the excellent staff at Hosteria Los Hielos. They found me a great discount for a rental car, helped us to book the excursions we wanted, and, without us even asking for such a late extension, allowed us to stay in our room until 6 pm on check-out day because they room wasn't booked for that night (we were there in the low season, so this might not be possible in the summer!).

The hotel and are room were beautiful. We had a great view of the Bahia Redonda on Lago Argentina, and the views from the dining room and lounge were also excellent. Breakfast was exceptional. Unlike our hotel in El Chalten, Hosteria Los Hielos provided a great breakfast to fill you up for a day of hiking, or in our case, glacier-walking. Fresh-squeezed juice, lots of breads and toppings, including calafate and rosa mosqueta jams, as well as cereals, several types of nuts, raisins, etc.

The hotel is a little bit away from the center of town, which was nice because we had more of a nature experience. Another plus is that if you go on an excursion to Perito Moreno, you will be the last ones picked up, since the Hosteria is outside of town on the road to Perito Moreno, so you can sleep in a little longer!

Desiree, Geraldine, and Edgardo's hospitality, combined with a beautiful hotel and setting, made this our favorite hotel during our travels in Argentina.
