This hotel seems nice at firts but fails to deliver in many things. Here is a list of pros and cons.

PROS:
1. Beautiful view of the lake (although most hotels in this price range offer the same views)

2. Great pool setting.

CONS:
1. The window in my room was not sealed proporly and cold wind came in. They fixed it with a nasty duck tape and that was it.

2. Noisy rooms. This is really bad, probably the worst in this hotel. I could hear everything from every room around the room I stayed. I've seen bad soundproofing but in this hotel it is just ridiculous. Spoiled our stay.

3. Bathtubs: Bathtubs were built in a way that when you use the shower, the bathroom gets flooded. Seriously flooded.

4. Heated floors don't work properly. They only heat up a tiny part of the room's floor and half the bathrooms.

5. Electric curtains don't funfction properly. They tried setting up something cool but the mechanism gets jammed all the time and you need to check the curtains every time you open or close them. Plus, mine didn't work at first and we had to call maintenance twice.

6. Curtain in the room was ripped in 3 places. They changed it after I complained.

7. Smoke in common areas. I stayed in the 6th floor (top floor) and it constantly had very strong smell of smoke. To the point that the smell came into the non-smoking rooms.

8. The pool is the best thing about this hotel. Although, they managed to get the water cold for over 3 days, making it impossible to get in the water. We could only use it for 1 day.

SUMMARY: Don't stay at Xelena. El Calafate has tons of hotels and you can do a lot better for half the money. Noisy rooms that are poorly maintained ruin the whole experience. The pool is great, but they do something to it every 3 days that makes the water go really cold and it's impossible to use it.

Go for the smaller hotels with personal service. You spend less and have a much more relaxing experience.

it would be unfair to rate this hotel according to international standards as, well, it's at the end of the earth in some respects. but relative to other lodging to be found in and around El Calafate, Xelena is excellent. The facilities themselves I would only give 4 stars at best (the indoor/outdoor pool -- with an infinity edge out to glacial Lago Argentino and distant Patagonian hills -- bolsters that rating considerably. The hotel is certainly well-maintained, the housekeeping faultless, and the breakfast buffet bountiful and of superb quality. The views are truly mesmerizing from much of the hotel (our room had views of Lago Argentino as well as the twinkling lights of El Calafate town in evening). Complementary cocktail/drink on arrival was a nice touch. What sets this hotel apart, however, is its truly extraordinary staff. In my travels I've stayed in everything from holes in the ground to boutiques to Ritz/FS/MO type affairs and RARELY have I encountered as hospitable, effective and gracious a staff as that which cared for us at Xelena. Everyone who worked with us was uniformly welcoming, knowledgeable, and professional -- from the affable owners (who can be seen around the facility everyday) to the bellmen, from the charming breakfast waitstaff to the front desk staff (day AND night) who also double as concierges. Every need was met with alacrity, courtesy, and a smile: from dinner reservations at La Tablita (a MUST -- the BEST parrilla/resto in all of Patagonia), to taxi services, to helping to book excursions in/around glacier country. Go for the stunning setting, stay for the wonderful staff. I can't say enough good things about them.

A note about location away from Calafate town: a non-issue. I was quite concerned about the distance from the town center when booking. Turns out transportation is very easy (free shuttles all day long; shuttle driver ensures everyone makes it back to the hotel on the last shuttle even if he has to make multiple trips!) and taxis are plentiful and inexpensive. In fact, it was kind of nice to be away from the city center and right on Lago Argentino.

We stayed at the Xelena Hotel for 3 nights in September. We could not fault this hotel. It has been opened for almost 2 years and the staff are superb. Most speak some English but all of them tried to make our stay as enjoyable and relaxing as they could. The hotel offers a free shuttle bus between the town of Calafate and the hotel which is very handy because the town is well worth visiting. It has a wide variety of very good restaurants and many excellent craft shops. We did two tours during our stay - the first was the minitrek to Perito Moreno Glacier. This was excellent. We also did a full day tour cruising the lake and visiting other glaciers. Avoid this at all costs if you don't enjoy being squashed on a catamaran with 300+ of your closest camera clicking friends. It was generally an awful experience although the scenery was spectacular.

Firstly, the arrival over the impossibly blue Rio Santa Cruz was amazing. The tiny airport was welcoming and a taxi was really easy to find (just next to the tiny luggage carousel is a lady who will fix you up in no time). A 25 minute trip from the airport and we were deposited in front of the Xelena Deluxe Suites Hotel. Lovely, friendly staff. We had pre-paid and were whisked down 3 floors to our huge room with marvellous view of the Lago Argentina. The fantastic reception staff arranged a booking for dinner at a local restaurant and arranged our tour to the Perito Moreno glacier. Breakfasts were more than adequate and it was wierd for us to experience darkness at nearly 9.00 am! My only complaint is that the walls are really thin and we had a screaming kid next door for both nights of our stay (the parents started screaming at each other too!). The hotel is a brisk 20 minutes walk from town but they have a free shuttle every half hour if you're not up to it. Calafate is of a similar latitude south as London is north but much further inland so the weather is chilly in the winter to say the least. The hotel has an indoor pool (heated) but it was rather busy and the water looked a little murky (it was already evening so many hours of swim beforehand, I guess). On the whole a really nice stay indeed.
