“Great value and designs”
Reviewed January 5, 2013

Modern, very chic designs, rooms with a unique touch, and at the approx US$150, very good value.
For room, on windy days, it can get a little noisy in the upper floor facing wind direction, so recommend keeping that in mind when checking in.
Location is ok, to the main street it's a 10min walk. Would definitely stay again.

Probably the best hotel in El Calafate. Very good and modern design with lots of ethnic materials and furniture. Young and friendly staff. Especially the bartender is very friendly and funny ! Talk to him for the best restaurants. We met him at one of his own recommendations and were immediately introduced to his family and offered two glasses of wine !
Rooms are great, especially the corner suites. The only small downside is that trafiic causes some problems when sleeping with windows open.

Room Tip: Take a corner room (which are probably suites)

I loved the design of this hotel, it brings the outdoors in, with features such antler door handles, cow hide seats. Large rooms with spacious modern bathrooms. It sits perched on the top of a hill which gives great views. Reminds me of the Bates Hotel in the old horror movie Psycho. Not spooky. It is about a 10 minute walk to the main part of town. Swimming pool area small but nice. Breakfast ok, staff ok. It would have been nice to see the fire lite, maybe they do that in winter.

My husband and I spent two nights at Esplendor. We were wowed by the design from the moment we opened the front door, which is what one might call "modern rustic" - lots of creamy neutrals punctuated by rustic, faded wood, sheepskins, and metal antlers. Our room, a suite, had a king size bed with ample pillows and soft bedding, a living area complete with chaise and chairs, and a bathroom that included a shallow colored concrete bathtub to augment the shower. If you need the space to spread out a suite is lovely. We ended up spending very little time in our room, though, because it was an easy walk down to the Main Street for dinner, and we drove to El Chalten and the Perito Moreno glacier while we stayed there.

We enjoyed the unique welcome drink made with an orange-scented Argentinian liqueur by the friendly bartender and the ample breakfast of cereals, yogurt, homemade bread, sweets, fruit, meats and cheeses.

The front desk staff did their best to be helpful with directions and advice given our nonexistent Spanish and their limited English. (Note to self when traveling in Patagonia: spend some time learning Spanish before getting on the plane.)

For its great location in town, decor and service we would easily stay again.

The Esplendor has a lot to offer in architecture and creative decorating, however a single incident warrants that we recommend you do not stay here. A camera and a cell phone were stolen from our hotel room in the evening while we were down in the lobby.

We returned to the hotel the evening of November 9, 2012 at about 7:30 pm. In our room I removed the camera battery and installed it in the charger in an outlet, leaving the camera on the TV table in our room. The cell phone was left on the night table next to the bed in our room. We spent the evening in the hotel lobby visiting with travel companions and returned to our room at midnight, at which time we found the camera missing but the charger and battery still in the outlet.

At around midnight I immediately notified the bar/kitchen worker who was apparently the only person on duty besides the desk clerk. Present in the hotel while I was reporting the theft were our travel companions, who are well known to us, the two hotel workers mentioned, and a woman, unidentified at that time, and man in the bar. There were no other hotel guests that we recall besides our travel companions. During our discussions with the hotel workers the unknown woman and man left through the front door.

The next morning we learned that the unidentified woman was the hotel manager. We, along with the trip coordinator, discussed the theft at length with her but received no cooperation. She provided a hand-written list of key card accesses to our room, but listed the room number instead of the card key code; therefore apparently another card key was coded to our room since we had only one card key. She refused to provide a hotel statement that we had reported the theft. The manager told us that she spoke with the owner by telephone, and he instructed her to not provide us the hotel statement we requested. The manager refused to allow us to contact the owner.

When packing to leave the next morning we discovered the cell phone was gone also.

It is our opinion that this incident outweighs any and all hotel amenities and that the Esplendor should be avoided.

Lovely large room, and given the other hotels in this tiny town, I think they are one of the best. Reception staff could have a better command of English, but the bar staff were super friendly and helpful and have very good English. We had to wander into town to book our ice hike trip, a concierge service of sorts would have made this place a 5 star.
