“Heaven”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

After Iguazu and Buenos Aries we were prepared for a let down, how wrong we were.
We arrived at The Eolo in El Calafate ,it is heaven on earth. It is a laid back Relais Chateaux hotel not super luxury though in fact it was my favourite hotel in our South American trip.
The hotel is set among breath taking scenery without a building in sight. Our room no 12 was quiet with the most relaxing view ever.
The staff called us by our names and could not have been more helpful.
All round the hotel are picture windows overlooking a divine lake.
There are many activities, walking, riding and visiting the fantastic glacier at Perito Moreno.
The food was the best we had on our 3 week tour which was brilliantly organized by Nick French of 'The South American Specialists'.All his guides were first class as were the hotels

Room Tip: Number 12 was so quiet

Excellent meals and comfortable rooms and activities. We stayed in #5, which is on the way to the dining room and is therefore a little noisier than other rooms due to footsteps coming and going. We were on a Backroads trip and enjoyed the staff and accommodations.

Room Tip: The property is real isolated, so your activities are limited to what they offer. Also, there is th...

Upon arriving at the El Calafate airport, Eolo staff was waiting for us for the short drive (30 min) to the hotel. The Eolo staff received us at the door and we made our way to the living room. With comfortable seating and spectacular views, we were giving tea and pastries as we reviewed our excursions. After a tour of the property we were shown our room. We reserved one of the corner rooms and were not disappointed. The room had large windows with to-die for views, large bathroom and beautiful furnishings. Eolo is impeccably run; the staff is friendly and goes out of their way to make your stay an unforgettable experience.
The meal service was very good. There was good variety for all meals and a lovely wine list. We appreciated that lunch boxes were provided for all- day excursions.
The Eolo staff also did a fantastic job recommending excursions.
Day 2 – Big Ice. Wow! A long day, but well worth it. Since the hotel sits far back from the road, they will drive you to the gate to wait for the tour bus. After a ½ hour ride, you arrive at the cat-walks of Perito Moreno. After about ½ hour, you are transferred to a boat for the short ride to the glacier. Once you are back on land, it is 1 ½ hour hike to the glacier. Once on the glacier you have about 4 hours of trekking. In January, the temperature was between 40 and 50F. Prepare for wind. For those mid-west folks, think Wyoming on steroids. Layer, Layers, Layers.
Day 3 – Valley of the Fossils. When I was researching excursions, I did not find much information on this excursions or reviews so I was a little nervous. The day was spectacular. Another very long day…2 ½ hour boat ride with glacier and icebergs plenty. You then take a jeep ride to a look-out and then hike back to the boat – 10 miles.
Day 4 – Horseback riding on Eolo property. A relaxing 2 hour ride viewing pink flamingos, sheep and cattle.
Thank you to the staff at Eolo for making this a wonderful and breathtaking experience.

EOLO is Patagonian Styled Hotel that is in the middle of acres and acre of land in a beautiful valley where the beauty and vastness is indescribable. The hotel rooms are simple but the food, service, amenities and beauty more than make up for it. We rode horses, visited the glaciers and the icebergs and honestly did not want to leave. El Califate and Patagonia in general are very enticing and we would definitely return. We have to since we at the Califate berries. Don't miss EOLO and the wonderful area.

I had a disappointing experience here, and after staying at a true 5 star hotel elsewhere in Patagonia, I believe this place is overrated. First, the good things. The food is R&C quality, delicious and creative presentations of local meats and vegetables, superb wines and wine cellar, and excellent attentive wait staff. The dining room faces east and the setting sun lights up the landscape for sunset at 9:30PM.

What irked me were the rooms. They were spartan at best. The views might have made up for it, save for my experience. There are three premium suites. Two have a picture window view of one of the most incredible landscapes on earth. I've included a photo of the views from those two.

The third, number 13, to which I was shown, had a view of the service road, and I've included a shot of the view from there as well. I complained, and the woman who showed us to our room said she would check on another and get back to us. She never did. I had to call the front desk to find that there was no other availability, and I asked to speak to the manager.

Since the other two premium rooms were booked for our stay, he offered us a standard room with a smaller window but facing the landscape. He claimed that space determined whether a suite was premium, not the view. Excuse me? Compare the two photos. Also, the living area of the suite 13 was a nice sized separate room, furnished with a wooden bench...that was it. No comfortable chairs, no desk, nothing else.

We reluctantly took the standard room, and were compensated by a reduced rate and complimentary wine by the glass during our stay. I was offended by the blithe attitude of the management, offering up this expensive suite that faced the service road as if it were the equal of the other two.

The moral of this tale is that if you want a premium suite, do not book Room 13. Check to make sure of the suite you're getting.

My overall experience aside from the dining room and the unbelievable location is that Eolo is mediocre. It could be better if there were better appointed rooms and an honest attitude about what you will get for your money.

Room Tip: Avoid suite 13. Ask about the views from the standard suites through the smaller windows.

After a very difficult time we spent 1 night here and in the short 24 hours with Valentin, Roberto and the team experienced the real warmth of the Patagonian spirit. The floor to ceiling windows provided panoramic views of the lake, mountains and the valley and the generous hospitality was second to none. The quality of every aspect of food on offer was sublime...I only wish we could have stayed a further 24 hours.. but we will return!

Room Tip: corner suite has a double panoramic set of views.
