EOLO - Patagonia's Spirit - Relais & Chateaux
Ranked #1 of 70 Hotels in El Calafate
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 23, 2012

I stayed in Eolo in April 2012. The hotel is absolutely gorgeous, set in desert-like surroundings, the lobby as you come in is looking out to a beautiful landscape of mountains and grazing cows. The room was beautiful, with large windows all around for maximum view. I would recommend to stay at either the oveja (sheep) room or on the other side I can't remember the name of the room but it is called after a type or argentine bird, sounds like comrode or something... it's by the library. These two rooms are the best and have extra views because they are corner rooms. The rooms were very private, good sized bath (though took forever to fill) and great l'occitane toiletries. Great wi-fi. I haven't tried the spa but there is only 1 small treatment room, if more than 1 person want a treatment they can do it in one of the empty hotel rooms. The wine list was very good, not bad prices. The food was excellent, especially dinners. The hotel also had a small inside pool but more symbolic than useful. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We stayed for 3 days and as for El Calafate, my husband and I went on the 8-hour boat trip to see the different glaciers. It was gorgeous and a great experience. They don't serve much food on it but the hotel gives you a nice packed lunch. Also bring a book or something to keep you occupied if you get a bit bored in-between glaciers. We booked V.I.P tickets which gave you a special roomy place at the top front with max 20 or so people with its own outside space, well worth the extra money since the regular space is like a bus and I couldn't imagine spending 8 hours there. Also we did an excursion to walk on a glacier, it was about 2.5 hours and it was one of the most beautiful things I've even seen in my life. You must do it if you go to El Calafate. But also you need to bring your own lunch, which Eolo provides.
The breakfast at Eolo was very good. There's a buffet plus a-la-carte, but excursions and activities normally start early and it takes time for the a-la-carte to arrive, so I would recommend to order your a-la-carte breakfast in advance for a specific time in the morning so you won't have to rush or waste time.
I would absolutely go back again to this hotel, one of the better places where I stayed, it is luxurious (but not pretentious) and beautiful, the activities are excellent, El Calafates' glaciers are a wonder for the eyes and the food and wine are as they should be in Argentina!

Room Tip: I would recommend to stay at either the oveja (sheep) room or on the other side I can't remember...

Our stay at Eolo was amazing, so worth the price. We don't usually like to stay in places that cost this much, we find we like the mid range places better because we meet people who are more interesting, and we don't need the poshness of the upper echelon. But we couldn't find another place that we liked in the area, so we went with Eolo, and I am SO GLAD we did. The food is impeccable. Lunch and dinner and three course meals. We had a bottle of wine the first night, and they held it for us for the next night. Our room was spectacular! The bathroom was lovely, excellent water pressure, although the water temperature was inconsistent (sometimes not really hot). The hotel was very wheelchair friendly, although a temporary ramp to the main living room/ seating area was very steep, and the transfer into the tub was a bit of a stretch. Wifi worked well throughout the building. Breakfast was good: eggs, bacon, breads, cold cereal, tea/coffee, juice. We had the bag lunch one day: it was horrible and quite a departure from the amazing meals at the hotel. We loved the 4x4 adventure (you get to the top of a mountain you would not otherwise see), the zipline, and a walk on the dirt road. We rented a car to drive to the glaciar which we saw once in the evening and once in the morning. The views are spectacular. We stayed 3 nights, 3 days, and that was a perfect amount.

Room Tip: Our room faced Torres del Paine. I think all rooms probably have AMAZING views. The walls are a bi...

An amazing setting, intimate lodge with warm and accommodating staff. Inventive and first rate cuisine on full board arrangement. Distant from town perched on a hill with magnificent views and transport made easy. Staff very proficient in English.

Eolo is situated a few hundred feet up a small mountain range outside of El Calafate in Patagonia. The setting is incredible, the view is breathtakingly expansive and the property grounds are tastefully incorporated into the land. Our room was spacious and had an amazing view of the surrounding mountains. The rooms and overall interior design promote comfort more than aesthetics; comfortable bed and sheets. For a hotel in this price point, I'd characterize the interior of the hotel as 'nice, not great.'

The food at Eolo is excellent. For a small hotel in a removed location in Patagonia, I came in with modest expectations. At every meal, I was amazed by the quality of the presentation, ingredients and taste. My wife and I had some great meals at Eolo.

The service at Eolo is quite good and is on par with most Relais properties. Everyone that works at Eolo is genuinely pleasant and friendly, creating an environment where you almost feel 'at home.' They make it easy to have a relaxing stay.

If you are physically fit, I'd strongly recommended the extended hike of Perito Moreno. Eolo will arrange for the transfer and packs a great lunch for the trip. We hiked to the middle of one of the world's largest glaciers and had our packed lunch and wine; pretty memorable!

I would definitely encourage you to go horseback riding on the Eolo property, especially if you can arrange for Robert as your guide. We actually rode horses twice because we had so much fun the first time.

Overall, I'd highly recommend Eolo.

Great (very great) location. Silent (You actually hear the silence). Perfect infrastructure: rooms; restaurant; spa area; reading area; etc. (Just a small advise: the background music could be more background). Food which is fitting Relais & Chateau standards: My wife, who is not a "meat eater", has eaten the best lamb ever. Excellent service: people are there when you need them and they are invisible when you don't need them. And yes, it is expensive. But this you know when you book.

Room Tip: Corner rooms were great

EOLO is a great place to stay to get away from it all. It is set on a large estancia with wonderful views of the mountains and Lake Argentina. The rooms are very comfortable with good beds, pillows, sheets, etc. The restaurant where you get all your meals is very good- especially the Patagonian lamb. The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff is a real plus. They will arrange everything for you. The main excursion points are closer than if you stayed in town. No doubt you can take advantage of these if you stay in town at a significantly lower price point but if you are going all the way to Patagonia and can afford it, this is the place to stay.

The hotel is beautifully situated in an impressive, wide valley with glimpses of Torres del Paine between the surrounding mountains. All the rooms are tastefully furnished and decorated with excellent views of the countryside. We found the staff attentive and friendly.
Alcoholic drinks were not included in the package so the staff kept a note of these behind the bar - but we were not asked to sign for them. We kept a note of our drinks bill so that there would be no confusion when the time came to settle our account. However, when we were presented with our bill we found two drinks had been included which we had not ordered – these were removed without dispute. On the other hand, the price of the drinks quoted on the bar list did not match what we were being charged. When we queried the difference in price between the US$7 quoted on the bar list for Beefeater gin and the US$12 we were being charged, we were told that the additional US$5 was for the tonic, ice, lemon and making it! We refused to pay this and, after a lot of discussion, the bill was reduced to the price quoted. Just be aware when ordering drinks!

Unfortunately, this unnecessary hassle has left us with unhappy memories of the place.
