Reviewed January 23, 2012

We recently stayed at Posada Karut Josh after reading the excellent reviews in tripadvisor. Firstly I would start by saying that Federico is an excellent host who could not do enough for us. My wife is pregnant and he was extremely kind in helping us and advising as to what tours we could partake in. He is an extremely lovely man and I hope that when reading this review, he takes these comments a constructive criticism. Yes the posada is not the most central. But thats not a major issue. The room we stayed in was tired and dated. The floors were old and stained and the curtains did not shut properly. The room was of a decent size and you felt that with a little bit of TLC and a new paint job, it could be very nice. The outside area at the rear has a great view over the lake, bit it is unkept and messy. The path at the rear, which leads to the main road, is steep and unmarked. Federico, if you reading this; your warmth and hospitality as a host, shines through. But some simple improvements could make all the difference. I think that this B&B was not for us. Others looking for a base to explore the glacier and a great host to advise, will surely be fine with this.

Room Tip: Have one facing the lake

Thanks for your words. Just one comment to this opinion: I think that if someone is looking for a 4-5 stars hotel service, don't have to make a reservation in a B&B. But we appreciate all the comments, as everything is useful to make us grow up, to improve our service.

This very friendly B & B is run by a wonderful Italian couple. The communication by email before we went was friendly and informative. We stayed for 3 nights in December 2011.

Rooms here are simple and spotless. It's not plush but it's comfortable and very hospitable. The view from the breakfast/dining room looks like a picture. There is a garden at the rear of the property which has a few seats should you want to relax outdoors.

It’s a short walk (minutes) into the main area of the town where there are lots of café’s restaurants, shops etc.

My partner and I are never normally keen to have dinner in the hotels or B & B’s we stay in as we prefer to go out and explore but here we made an exception. We defy you to not be tempted by the aromas that Federico (the owner) produces from the kitchen. Packed lunches were very substantial and delicious. We would recommend that you arrange to take these tasty packages with you if you are heading out to explore the delights of the National Park and glaciers as you will be able to find delightful spots to eat your lunch and you won’t have to queue up missing out on the spectacular scenery. Federico and his wife Claudia clearly enjoy eating and were able to recommend other very good restaurants to us. As with the rest of Argentina just remember portions are generous.
Federico was fluently able to suggest and book excursions for us. He did tell us which company they used and said there were other companies that may be cheaper but they could also be more expensive. There was no pressure at all to make the booking through him.

Although we stayed in other much more expensive hotels on our trip this was one was quite possibly the most friendly and enjoyable as well as being great value for money.

It´s not the most central B&B and you have to walk about 800m to reach the start of the main street with its shops and restaurants, but it´s worth staying there. The host is Italian and offers restaurant style food in his B&B in the evening. And boy, can he cook! The rooms are clean and OK, but the quality of service and friendlyness is really what makes this place special.
His recommandation for our activities were also spot on: Hiele y Aventura on day one to go to Perito Moreno glacier and on day 2 take a cruise with Solo Patagonia (ask for VIP tickets, which cost 200 ARG$ extra, but are well worth it as you get prime seats and whiskey + drinks + food included). But back to this place, if you search for a place to stay - don´t look any further.

Claudia and her husband Frederico are excellent hosts. Even before we arrived Claudia was very responsive to e-mails and provided helpful information. They were always willing to help and made our stay in El Calafate special. After we arrived, they found and booked another hosteria for our last night in El Calafate because our plans hade changed due to the volcano activity in Chile. They suggested the Cerro Frias tour when the Estancia Christina tour was filled. Claudia even volunteered to print and delivered the boarding passes for our flight to Buenos Aires to our new hosteria.

Frederico is an excellent cook and makes a special meal each evening. I had roasted chicken and roasted potatoes which was delicious and very reasonably priced. My wife didn't want something as heavy and Frederico volunteered to make her vegetable soup. It too was very good.

The B&B is away from, but walking distance from town. We stayed in an upstairs room which was good sized. The only noise we noticed occasionally, was from the neighbors dogs barking. Breakfasts were the traditional Argentine fare and included items baked by Frederico. There is a nice view of the lake from the dining room. If you're looking for a friendly and comfortable place to stay in El Calafate, this is the place to stay.

Stayed 2 nights.
Hosts were very helpful and friendly. Rooms and breakfast all fine.
Only issue was local dogs, and there are a few in the same street. They had barking sessions at different times night and day. The owner raised the issue to see if they had disturbed us. This impressed me as most Argentinian b and b owners don't think about such things!
So as I have found in other places, where the accommodation is close to town, bring ear plugs. If its not dogs it will be roosters or noisy cars or bikes !

The owners are very friendly and helpful, the place feels like home. It's not downtown but downtown in El Calafate doesn't offer much beside a few restaurants and anyway there's great food inside. We were very happy to choose Karut Josh!
The rooms are nice, comfortable and with nice clean bathrooms. Great breakfasts and again, Claudia and Federico are awesome.

It is listed as "top end" in the LP, but really didn't feel top end at all - more "midrange". Very simple rooms, comfortable enough, good bathroom but really nothing special. Decent value for money at 380 pesos for a triple.
Friendly Italian owner.
