“Best Hostel Ever”
Reviewed March 11, 2014 via mobile

Just stayed there a week ago, I would say this is one of the best hostel ever for me and for others too. Actually, I think it's not hostel at all, it's more like guesthouse which is much more homie. All staffs welcomed you very warmly and made you feel like real home. They are also very informative and helped you in booking tours in advance. Their kid, Leon, is very cute too :) The room is super clean, also bathroom and kitchen. The hostel is very well kept. I wish other hostels I've stayed to be like this hostel.

Lautaro is clean, quiet, cozy and run by the sweetest family who greets you by name, introduces you to other travelers to spark conversations, and makes the most delicious breakfast and dinners. They even taught us how to cook veggies in a way that is so healthy and EASY we use it at other hostels' kitchens. Reserve early, we lucked out when there was a last minute cancellation. And their adorable young son is often exploring the common area, so please have kid-friendly language and habits!

What a wonderful, family run hostel! The owners of this place are warm, friendly people. The hostel consists of two separate buildings. From what I could tell, there was just one 4 bedroom dorm, with the other rooms being doubles. I was in the 4 bed dorm, and it was a reasonable size, with comfortable beds and lockers. There are two bathrooms for I think 8 people, and a small kitchen. So this aspect of it is just standard hostel. All of the areas were kept very clean, and they make your bed for you each day (always a nice luxury). In the main building there is a nice dining area, where you can get tea, coffee and hot chocolate whenever you want it. There is really good wi fi in both buildings. Breakfast was nice. Standard Argentine fare - cereal, coffee, toast, and pastries. I booked my bus ticket to the Perito Moreno glacier through them and they didn't charge a commission. They run a small restaurant on site, and the food is absolutely delicious and reasonably priced. You need to give them a couple of hours notice that you are going to have dinner (as it is all prepared and cooked on site), so you can't arrive at 8pm, and expect dinner there. The location is good, a 15 minute walk from the bus station, and two blocks off the main street.

This place was a gem of a find! We turned up after a very, very long journey from Peru and instantly felt at home. True, the actual hostel is fairly basic, but it's exceptionally clean, warm and filled with all the little things that make a stay comfortable. What really makes this place great though is Dario, the host, and his family. They made us feel truly welcome and ensured our stay in El Calafate went without a hitch. They helped us arrange all of our excursions, ensuring we got the best value! They knew all the best places to eat and, when we ate at the hostel one evening, provided us with a wonderful meal. I can't recommend this place enough! The hostel is also conveniently located to the main strip (and the bird sanctuary, a great find, 10 minutes walk away!).

The hostel is very close to the bus stand and most places around are at 10-20 minute walking radius. The hosts are exceptionally friendly. Dario is a wonderful chef, try the fish dishes. Couple of people i met in the hostel were looking out for accommodation in Chalten, most of the good hostels were booked during that time, Dario made a few calls to people in Chalten and got them a place to stay. Thought it was quite a good gesture.

The only drawback as i see, is they do not accept credit cards.

The reviews we found online made Hospedaje Lautaro seem exceptional, but we found that it was a simple place with the atmosphere of a youth hostel. The staff were indeed friendly, but we value a quality room over social interaction with the staff. We stayed in two different rooms: one was basic, and the other was sub-par. Neither looked remotely like the pictures on their website. The breakfast is fine if you like bread (which I don't eat), but to be fair, this seems to be an Argentinian thing. In summary, Hospedaje Lautaro was inexpensive, but we would have preferred to spend a little more for something nicer.

Belen and Dario were amazing hosts. Seriously amazing. Belen is one of the loveliest, most friendly people we have ever met, and Dario is a wonderful chef. Definitely stay in and eat at the B&B at least one night. Breakfast was also great. Belen can make travel bookings for you (seriously take her up on this offer - it is so much easier!). The location was excellent too.

The only downside was that our room was a little on the small side and they only accept cash. This is hard when the ATMs in town only dispense small amounts of cash per transaction (~US$130) and you have to pay about US$7 for each. Best to take plenty of cash with you (there are also long lines at the banks).

Room Tip: We were in a private twin room that was not in the main house. It was a little on the small side.
