My wife and I took the Big Ice excursion while we were on our honeymoon. We were picked up at 7am and back home by 7pm. After a 1 hour ride to a vantage point where we had 1 hour to check out the glacier we were brought to the dock where we boarded a small ship to take us to a base camp to meet our guide and start our hike. There was approximately 7 hours of hiking involved, 1 hour each way between the base camp where you get your crampons fit and safety harness put on and then 5 hours on the ice with a 30-45 minute break for lunch.

Needless to say the experience was awesome and gruelling all at the same time. Would I recommend Big Ice over the Mini Trekking to adventure seekers and nature lovers and people who can spend the whole day hiking. If you want an awesome experience on the glacier but think that a couple of hours of looking at ice is enough the Mini Trekking is probably better.

If we had to do it again the Mini Trekking is probably what we'd do, partially because our toes were sore due to wearing cross training running shoes as opposed to hiking boots (make sure to wear them) and because the second half of the glacier walk was much like the first half. We felt that once we'd seen 10 crevice and drain holes we'd kinda seen them all.

The people who take you on the trek are awesome! They totally made the experience for us.

Thank Matthew H

We did the "Big Ice" hike today. Be warned that this is a 12-hour excursion - 7am pick up from the hotel and a return to El Calafate at 7pm. The cost is approx US $150 per person and you need to bring your own lunch. However, the price includes a really comfortable bus for 1.25 hours to the glacier viewing balconies - where you get to spend an hour. Initially I thought this wasn't going to be enough, but we spent the rest of the day on the ice - so an hour is a starter or a taster for what the rest of the day has in store. You then get back on the bus and drive to the little jetty where the boat awaits for the cruise across the lake to the trekking centre. After an orientation talk there ten follows a 1.5 hour walk through the forest up the moraine to a "hut" in the forest where we were issue with croons and harnesses (which get worn by all, but not used - unless there's an incident (like getting stuck in a crevasse)). Then onto the ice and 3-3.5 hours of hiking through crevasses exploring the ice and the lakes and rivers that exist on and in the glacier. TOTALLY AMAZING! Nothing else really describes how good this is - look at people's photos on Google images to get some idea. It is very tiring and exertive - hence the maximum age limit for the Big Ice trek is 50 (persons up to 55 years of age may do re mini trekking though). Back on the boat back across the lake to the bus we had a glass of whiskey and a cookie - and ten on the bus we were given a souvenir of our trip and a miniature of liqueur - a nice touch at the end of the day. Well worth doing - an amazing experience.

We appreciated the level of organization and promptness of this tour. Our bus was on time in the morning, we got ample time at the balconies and our time on the glacier itself did not seem rushed at all. Also, the guides were all extremely friendly and they all spoke English perfectly. The whiskey at the end of the glacier walk was a nice little touch too. We highly recommend this tour - it's a must-do if you find yourself in El Calafate.

One of the must do excursions in calafate I find (this one or big ice)
Only drawback was not having enough time at the balconies at the end of the day.

We took the excursion two days ago from El Calafate to Torres del Paine (Chile), by Helio y aventura.

- the guide guy was not understanble in english and never looked at us while speaking
- there was no mini trekking as we were told by the agency in Calafate, only stops at miradors and a 30 min walk to see a waterfall
- the entrance fee for the park was 300 arg pesos for each and not 200 as we had been told
- we spent our time on different buses from 5.30 am to 21pm, with very little time in the park itself (which is very beautiful, still)
- we were promised a vegetarian lunch box but all we got was a tiny ham sandwich and crisps

I do not recommend this agency. It is not reliable. The price of the excursion (without the entrance fee for the park) was expensive : 700 arg pesos each.
