Recommended length of visit: More than 3 hours
Owner description: 4x4 - Horseback Ride - ZIP LINE- TREKKING Nature and adventure in Estancia Alice, El Calafate The Frias Mount, 1095 mt high, is located in the middle of a valley, offering unique views of the Argentino Lake and Andes Mountains: to the South, the “Cordon de los Cristales” and “Torres del Paine” (Chile’s National Park); to the West, Magallanes and Avellaneda peninsulas, and to the North, Fitz Roy Mount. Also, potencial wildlife viewing. Located in “Estancia Alice” (ranch), 23 kms West of El Calafate, heading to the same direction as the Perito Moreno Glacier, the Mount Frias is a great opportunity to enjoy regional wild fauna and flora, as well as typical estancia animals. Besides the characteristic shrub of Patangonian steppe, a lenga forest in the East slope of the mount can be appreciated. In the Estancia we offer 4 guided activities (4x4 – Trekking – Zip Line– Horseback riding). Although each of them has a particular circuit in the mount, they are carried out simultaneously by each guide and his group, allowing them to do differents activities and joining them together in the ranch, before returning to town. The morning trip offers the possibility (optional) to enjoy a traditional barbecue (Argentinian asado) with grilled vegetables, cooked in clay ovens. Otherwise, midday (12:00) and afternoon (15:30) trips offers fast-food service and drinks (not included) available in the ranch of the estancia, where passengers relax and end enjoy the surroundings before returning to El Calafate. THE 4x4 CIRCUIT We start the 4x4 trip from the farm gate ascending the Mount Frias, for trails with views of the main body of the Argentino Lake. After twenty minutes we stop in the first viewing point at 450 meters, watching at the Centinela river valley. We continue rising to the second viewing point at 1030 meters with incredible views of Torres del Paine, Southern and Northern channels of the Argentino Lake, the highest picks of the Andes mountain chain and the Fitz Roy mount, if the weather allows us. We continue the 4x4 adventure descending the Frias Mount trought the lengas forest in the east slope of the mount, finishing in the Quincho (country restaurant) of the estancia Alice main house where we’ll have meals before returning back to El Calafate. THE TREKKING / HORSEBACK RIDING CIRCUIT Whatever your age or level of riding is, you’ll enjoy this excursion. Beginners can experience a leisurely walk with our experienced guides. At the ranch you will meet your guide, who will explain some basic trail riding guidelines. The wide, well – sheltered trail leads you along the valley to the Frias. And is considered easy to moderate for trekking enthusiasts. We start the trekking or horseback riding going up to the Frias Mount, taking differents trails with your guides. After 30’ you can enjoy the valley of Centinela River and the Torres del Paine (Chile National Park ). There is potencial wildlife viewing (guanacos, hares, foxes-, armadillos and skunks), and cattle hill. Following the trail, it is possible to admire fantastic landscapes of Argentino Lake and the valley of Estancia Anita. After that, the group return to the main house of Estancia (Quincho). FLYING FOX / ZIP-LINE/ ZIP-WIRE / AERIAL RUNWAY / DEATH SLIDE / TYROLEAN CROSSING: “Consists of a pulley suspended on two cables mounted on an incline. It is designed to enable a user propelled by gravity to traverse from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable by holding on harnesses through polleys. The users are phisically attached to the cable by wearing a harness which it is hooked to a removible trolley. A Helmet is required among other security devices such as harness” DESCRIPTION OF FLYING FOX EXCURSION Once we have arrived in the Ranch we will provide you the necessary gear to be ready to enjoy an amazing adventure under the highest security conditions. After an instructive explanation, we depart in direction to the Southern slope of Frias mount where the launch pad is placed, at 1680 feet altitude (part of a trail is done by 4x4 and the rest it is done on foot). We check out again all the equipment and we get ready to cross the 1410 feet of cable. “A 4x4 ride amazing ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2013

Do not miss this tour. It is reasonably close to the center and you will have the opportunity to lear about the Patagonian nature. The guides are very kind and speak english, spanish and portuguese. The 4x4 Land Roveris not exactly comfortable, but is able to climb a path quite difficult. View is splendid and you can walk through different ecosystems.

“Not as advertised”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

We took this tour for horseback riding as we had a day to kill before our flight. Unfortunately, many things were not as advertised:
1-Their literature breathlessly describes it as a "5 hour ride to Mt. Frias" and that your "horses will be saddled so everything will be ready to start." Not true--the ride was 1 1/2 hours and we waited around to get going, including the gaucho preparing the horses.
2-They state that you will go to the "highest point on our horseback ride for an amazing 360 degree view". Not true--we went up a hill but turned around well short of any 360 degree view. The day was perfect so this was not weather related.
3-The guide spoke not a word of English--very disappointing for us.
4-The barbeque lunch started off well with the soup, was okay with the chicken, and utterly inedible with the beef--well done and tender as boot leather. Dessert was watery rice pudding with rice that was hard and grainy. We then waited around until we were transported back to town.
The scenery was quite beautiful while we were riding and it was peaceful and relaxing. However, be aware that what you get is not what is advertised, and if you chose to do this activity, definitely skip the lunch and get the earlier transport back to town, where you can eat something much, much better for the price.

“Horseback riding with incredible views!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 23, 2013

We were looking for a half-day trip and did the horseback riding. The landscape was amazing and our horses were so calm and gentle. The guide spoke Spanish (which we do speak as well) but this should not detract one bit from the scenery. We are not avid horse riders, but if you are looking for a great half-day excursion, definitely would recommend it. Even though there are 4wd tours, zip-lines, etc this did not feel touristy one bit. Kids joined us on the horseback ride as well and did great. You can arrange through almost anywhere in the city.

“Nice view”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 17, 2013

Cerro Frias is a nice place to visit to "complete" you El Calafate experience. The Cerro is a 1000 meters hill where you can see most of the Argentinean lake and part of the Chilean Andes tops, in a clear day. You buy the tour from many of the Tour Agencies in the city and they take you directly from the hotel. The bus will arrive in a farm-like place where you can choose to go walking, by horse or Land Rover.

“Consider if you have kids or have been nowhere else”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2013

We visited Cerro Frias on our last day in Patagonia after 3 weeks. The airline changed our flight so we had nearly a day to kill and decided to do this. We did the 4wd tour with lunch so I can not comment on the zipline or horses, which would be fun for kids. We opted for this as we were going straight to the airport. The Land Rover wound its way up and down the mountain with numerous stops and brief comments and ended up at the lodge with a very leisurely huge lunch that was nice. Ultimately we were underwhelmed as we had been to every major site and park in Chilean and Argentine Patagonia previous to this.
So, if you have not been anywhere else in Patagonia and need to go to a vista to view mountains and lakes and a ranch this might be your cup of tea. In retrospect we should have strolled along the esplanade in town and gone to the Glacier Museum. Our excursion cost USD$240.
