This nice hostel was suggested to me by a friend of mine who was there with her husband one year ago. She was right!
The hostel is in the centre of El Calafate at few minutes walking from the principal street, it is very confortable, useful, colored, warm. Gerardo always put on pleasant music, you have all what you need: Wi-fi, use of internet, a nice kitchen, laundry and a nice space outside. Besides, and it's very important, they are all very gentle and friendly and give you all the information you need to enjoy your staying there, for excursions and what you'd like to do. If I'll come back to El Calafate, surely I'll go back to Las Cabanitas!Muchas gracias para todos!!Paola

We stayed for three nights, in two rooms in the main house, one double and one with bunks, with a private bathroom. Although the rooms were just off the small lounge area, we were never disturbed by noise. The rooms were clean and the beds were comfortable. The shower-room was a bit of a squeeze but fine - plenty of hot water. We were greeted by friendly Gerardo at reception, and also met friendly Karim at breakfast.

Breakfast was a simple buffet, but more than filling. Evening meals are served, but we never ate there as they seemed quite expensive, especially for the kids, who can be a bit finicky.

The hostel is located on a quiet suburban street (we felt quite happy parking our hire car outside), but is only a few minutes walk from the main shopping drag through El Calafate. We happily walked into town several times to do chores, drink coffee, and eat evening meals. There are several banks, supermarkets, and a laundry nearby; it was good to catch up with ourselves after several days in Torres del Paine.

Our only quibble was that our laptop power cable got frazzled by the socket in our room, which cost us time and money to get fixed, but Gerardo didn't seem interested when we said there might be a problem with that particular socket. Since we have used the laptop all over North and South America, it strikes us that the problem probably didn't lie with it...

Anyway, that aside, Las Cabanitas was a delightful place to stay and we'd go back if we are ever in El Calafate again.

We spent 3 nights here in January 2012. This is a very nice, clean hostel that offers outstanding customer service. The cabins are small but cozy. They offer everything you need. We were not expecting luxury, all we wanted was a place to stay and we left with unforgettable memories. Gerardo and Karim were very helpful. From day one they strived to provide great customer service. They helped us book our mini trekking tour to Perito Moreno and coordinated our transportation. Breakfast was simple but way better than what we had at other hostels. They serve cereal, coffee, croissants, jam, dulce de leche, yogurt, juice and tea (a feist for us!). I could swear Gerardo (the owner) doesn't sleep, he's there 24 hours a day. He was the first face we saw in the morning and the last person to say good night to us. They offer laundry services for 50 pesos, they clean your room every day and can prepare you a lunch box for less than 60 pesos (with a sandwich, fruit, water and an alfajor). I personally felt at home here and didn't want to leave. This is for backpackers and people who are all about meeting new people and have a nice time, not for people who need to travel with all the luxuries they have at home, but hey, that's what travel is all about, right? making new friends and now the culture of the locals. I recommend this place on a heart beat to anyone and will definitely stay here again should I be back in a near future. Gracias Gerardo por todas sus atenciones!

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a cabanita if that's where you want to stay, otherwise you can end up rese...

I enjoyed everything about this place. First there is the cabins, small but cozy clean and well maintained. It has water and heater, even a microwave and a tiny table for two. we where two and we had plenty of space, four would fit if you leave your big backpacks in the storage and bring in your day pack.

Then, there is the service. just amazing. You have to meet Gerardo, the owner. He recommended amazing things to do and helped us coordinate our activities. The hostel has WiFi and offers laundry services. It is located 2 minutes walk from the main city strip (Ave. Liberator).

We stayed here twice (one our way in and out of Torres del Paines), once in a private room and once in a cabin out back. Both were fantastic. Clean, friendly, charming. The owner and staff were very knowledgable, helpful, friendly, and flexible. The hostel is definitely on the quieter side, if you're looking for that. Good wifi and common areas. They stored our bags for a week, which was a huge help.
