We just finished a 13 day trip in Argentina/Chile and El Galpon del Glaciar in El Calafate was, by far, the most delightful place we stayed. Everything from the welcome beverage and lunch, to the always friendly and helpful staff, to the amazing broad view of rolling land, wildlife and Lake Argentina, to the included excursions (read on), to the excellent dining. I just can't recommend it enough. Excusions: four hours in the evening include a guided tour of a working sheep ranch complete with hot chocolate and pastries, herding demonstration (using dogs and horses), horseback ring race (everyone can try!), nature/botanical tour of the grounds, sheep shearing demonstration, sit down dinner with an amazing variety of salads, fruits, vegetables, breads, and lamb served five ways (tenderloin, ribs, sausages), followed by a folkloric dance show. All included in our package!

The other included excursion was a horseback ride across the pastures and down to the immense Lake Argentina shore for 1-2 hrs depending in your wishes. We loved it - great horses and guides attuned to your needs (take it easy, gallop like the wind, discuss the region, etc.).

Things to know:

Located about 15 minutes outside of El Calafate but on the way to Perito Moreno Glaciar (which is why most people go to El Calafate). So if you prefer nature and views to the hubbub of town, it's perfect. They also include airport transfers!

Rooms are delightful with balconies, some with views of Lake Argentina, some not. Definitely ranch style rooms and if you have noisy neighbors, you will hear them - but those folks don't usually come here.

A wonderful relaxing oasis on a busy Argentina tour.

We spent two nights at the hotel. It was a pleasure to meet Glenda with whom we had been emailing. The location is beautiful and tranquil. It is outside of town on the road towards the Perrito Moreno Glacier. From our room, we looked out on a beautiful bed of tulips, across the grounds of the Estancia Alice to the lake. One morning we got up and and went for a leisurely horseback ride around the property - escorted by the owner (Esteban), one of the ranchmen and the ever present sheep dog. The staff was so helpful in planning our excursions and getting us to/from town and the airport. I wish we had planned a third night so that we could have explored more of the area.

Extended family (6 of us) enjoyed a delightful stay at this estancia, once a working sheep ranch. The rooms are small but certainly adequate. The hotel staff took care of everything at reasonable prices. They arranged a private tour guide to the glacier - not to be missed. We enjoyed good transportation to town for some shopping - all nicely arranged for us. The estancia tour and sheep shearing demo are really worth your time. Family members enjoyed the tour on horseback. The only area I suggest for improvement is the food quality. Breakfast was fine but dinner left much to be desired. Some of us filled up on bread and salad because the "steak" was inedible.

The Internet service was extremely slow but, hey, this was vacation. Who needs high tech when you have the great outdoors. The stars are incredible!!!

p.s. Skip the show.

We had an overall pleasant stay here last November. Couple notes:

-The place is far from town on a flat empty stretch land. The winds were incredibly strong and prohibitively cold at the time we were there. I intended to go on some long hikes when I booked the stay, that plan was quickly scratched.

-The area is full of hares that were brought in by the original European settlers. They have no natural predators there and roam everywhere. They are rather cute and fun to chase on horseback during your included ride.

-Speaking of horseback riding, our guide let us gallop on our horses even though we had no prior horseback riding experience. It was thrilling and terrifying at the same time. Our backs were sore the next day.

-The food at the dinner following the sheep demonstration was delicious. Go light on the cheap cuts of meat they serve in the beginning (but, do try the blood sausage!) and wait for the really good rack of lamb that they bring out towards the end :)

Fantastic two day stay her in April.
Great remote location and handily placed for the glaciers and El Calafate.
Brilliant service and staff, nothing is too much problem.

Very accommodating and the owners are fantastic people who looked after one us who had an (unrelated) allergic reation.

Great horse riding and a theme evening aroudn the sheep farm.

Good wholesome Estancia food and drink and comfortable rooms (not 5 star luxury) but fitting to the Estancia. Very clean and inviting.

Would recommend this for a few days to anyone from any age group.

My girlfriend and I stayed at the Galpon del Glaciar for 2 nights and can't say enough about it. I am 31 and she is 24. We had just spent the long day flying in from LA and when we arrived we were greeted by such warm, friendly people we were immediately at home.

I'm not sure what happened to the other people who left negative reviews here because ours was spectacular! Agreed, the rooms are quaint and not big, modern Hilton like rooms. But if you want The Hilton, this isn't the place for you.

The food was consistently great, as was the wine and the shows and extra activities were fun. We even stayed late one night and drank wine and played Spanish Estancia Monopoly with another couple in the dining hall.

You can't say enough about the grounds and the view. It is such a beautiful place and staying here truely make you feel secluded (in a good way). If you wanted to get away from it all - this would be a great place to start.

Plan to hike the grounds, linger during the afternoons over a glass of wine, chat with the staff and just slow down from life here in the States.

We stayed for 2 nights and that was a perfect stay. It's a bit more expensive than a hotel/hostel in town but it's well worth the experience.

You'll leave here feeling like you truely stayed in Patagonia.

I read some bad reviews about this Estancia (after I had booked it...) and was a bit worried, specially as I was traveling with my wife and nine-month daughter. But our stay was excellent! People usually stay there for 2 or 3 nights but because of the flights we had, we ended up staying 5 nights. We were afraid that it would be too long but with the activities in the estancia (e.g. great horse rides), in the region (Perito Moreno, etc) and walks on our own inside the estancia (absolutely stunning landscap + the estancia is a wild birds' reserve) we had a great and relaxing time. It was a really great way to experience Patagonia and I would definitely recommend it to everyone, including famillies with small children.

The staff is really friendly and helpful (especially the girls in the reception and Federico, the gaucho with a degree in Political Sciences...)

Now for the minus: our package included dinner and the food was decent but nothing to write home about... And the rooms were very nice and charming, with a nice closed varanda (sort of...) with stunning view but the noises coming in from the corridor and other rooms' bathrooms can be annoying.

And then there is the Show they host every night for both people staying in the estancia and others coming from El Calafate for the evening. It's really interesting to hear about the Estancia and how the work is done there. You can learn quite a lot about the way these estancias work (and used to work in the past). The dinner is not excellent but again, decent. And it's a relaxing and friendly environment. We had a really nice chat with an old couple from Buenos Aires there on holiday.
After desert there is a show with traditional regional dances and tango. On this one you can snob it for being kitsch (if you're french...) or you can chill, take it for what it is and have some fun, clapping away. In any case it lasts for only half hour.

So overall, I would recommend to anyone looking for a Estancia in the region, both as a base for exploring the region and for chilling around Lago Argentino looking at black-faced Ibis, condors and sheep!

NB: In January 2010 it offered the cheapest accomodation of the Estancias in the region, at least from the 8 or 10 I checked over the net and email.
