We had a private driver and guide take us into the national park and show us the highlights of this beautiful region. There was plenty of opportunity to hike and get out of the car especially at the Black Glacier. You can hear and see the calving of the glaciers. The only drawback are the annoying large horseflies!

The glacier is huge and we got to hear it calve. We happened to be in a van with tourists from Germany, Columbia, and Argentina so we had fun helping each other communicate.

It's sad to see how far this glacier has receded since 1941. Take a look at my picture, and think about the lake as a basin. The glacier used to cover the lake and you can see how far up it was by the color of the earth.
We enjoyed the drive from Bariloche. It's amazing how close you can get to the glacier (obviously, back in the day in the '40s you were right on it). Drive a little farther and you are at the top of the mountain. There's a place to take a short hike up to a waterfall.
We were there on a rather cold and windy summer day (12C) and were told we were lucky it was like that because the bugs were nowhere to be found. I gather there are normally a lot of flies there.
On the way out of the park you can see some other waterfalls -- really rapids and a short waterfall - that are an easy walk on a boardwalk.
Don't miss this attraction, and go before it melts! The drive alone to the park is worth it.

It's a Long drive and you can't really get too close to the glacier. But if you haven't seen a glacier before then it could be interesting. Especially how the upper art crumbles and reforms below.
