If you are driving from Bariloche to San Martin, the main highway north through Junin is the most direct route, but by far they most beautiful and enjoyable drive is turning off to Villa La Angostura, then taking the Seven Lakes route up to San Martin. The government has been working/upgrading this road for several years and it's close to being finished, so actually driving this way is not much longer now. This is a truly gorgeous drive along the base of the Andes, past rivers, lakes, scenic overlooks, stunning vistas. If you want to treat yourself stop at the Hotel Correntoso for lunch, or pack a picnic and stop along side one of the crystal clear rivers or lakes. Don't forget to take a bottle of wine, and if you are an fly-fisher, there are plenty of places to wet a line.

It was right all along when one of the fellow here commented that it wasn't too fantastic a drive as many a time, views were blocked by dense forest that have grown along the shores of these lakes.

If I could recalled vaguely, I love the drive from Bariloche to Villa La Angostura. The dirt road wasn't too bad as I have driven on such road conditions before.

On the way back, we didn't take the outer loop of paved road from San Martin de Los Andes to Bariloche. We backtrack on the same route of the seven lakes and on the way down, we made a turn on the left into Villa Traful. This lake has far better views than some of the one I have seen earlier in the morning.

All in all, it was good fun as I enjoy driving in the Lake District. Rental rates are high in bariloche. I went with Budget with seems to quote me a fair price.

Rent a car if there is more than one person. Even if you are a solo traveler, it's worth asking around in the hostel or hotel. I don't think it's worth it to pay a tour operator who likely to quote you around AR$400.

Rental cost - AR$480 for the first 200km and AR$0.66 for each extra km thereafter. Gas costs you about AR$150-200 round trip. The loop is about 350-400km. Do your own math and decide wisely.

If you don't have time, just do circuito chico. The views are awesome, and cheaper as well since you can bike on your own.

Lakes, rivers, waterfalls, lagoons. As living within a post card. The road runs through Lanin and Nahuel Huapi National Parks. In Villa La Angostura deserves to visit Bosque de Arrayanes in Arrayanes National Park. Unique in the World.
