“Feel at home in Argentina!”
Reviewed December 13, 2013

I knew this was the right place to stay just as soon as I sent off an enquiry to Casona del Rio. The response, from Yanina, was very prompt and I felt welcomed immediately. She was even willing to engage in further email conversation as my dates and arrival times changed. It was an online service that I was not used to getting because so many places just want you to confirm, pay and be gone.
It was great to have an airport pickup arranged by Casona del Rio arrive for me and then to arrive to such a homey welcome. We discussed places to go -- the Paleontological Museum is fantastic -- both in town and around the house.
I think Casona del Rio is particularly suitable for couples or families as it's quiet and private. Because it's a few kilometres out of town -- in a very picturesque spot on the river -- I think it would work best to have your own car if staying there, rather than have to rely on taxis.
I felt that I was a friend of Yanina almost as soon as I arrived, and certainly by the time I left.
It's certainly the place to stay if you want to feel at home in Argentina!

We stayed here two nights at the start of our tour to Paragonia tracing our Welsh history and had a wonderful experience, especially on the second night when we had had fantastic Welsh/Argentian night arranged by the family who arranged a surprise byminviting two local Welsh speakers. The welcome by the family was fantastic and the accommodation was simple, clean and charming and exceeded our expectations of a small B&B. Breakfast was great - lots of homemade cakes and jams and the steak on the second evening was delicious.

We stayed at La Casona del Rio for 3 nights, while visiting peninsula Valdes and Punta Tombo. It's a wonderful B&B in a charming location just outside Trelew. The owners are extremely welcoming and warm hearted and we felt treated as if we were part of the family. We spend one night with the family for dinner which was such a fun and enjoyable experience, not only for the delicious meal and wine but even more so for the company. We were travelling throughout Argentinia for 3 weeks and this is definitely one of the experience we enjoyed and remember most. Thank you Norma and Yanina!

Not being the sort of people who are excited by tea-houses, we had not planned to spend much time in the Trelew/Gaiman area. But last minute changes to our itinerary in the Peninsula Valdez had us scrambling for a place to stay in Trelew before our flight, and the only place available in our price range was La Casona del Rio. We were so lucky! It was by far our favorite lodging in Argentina.
(If you are trying to talk to the bus driver about it, it is located at Chacra ["Ranch"] numero Ciento-Cinco ["105"'] on Avenida Capitan Murga.)

We were a bit haggard and stressed when we arrived and Yanina, Norma & Carlos took such care with us that we immediately felt at home. Seriously, we loved them and can't say enough about how great they are. The house, which has been in their family for several generations, still has its original furniture & antiques. This is the authentic stuff--not bought at estate sales or recreated from old pictures, but the actual furnishings and artwork this family has owned and lived with since the 1940s. The beautiful surroundings and the kindness of the proprietors turned what could've been the most stressful part of our trip into the most relaxing.

If you are looking for downsides, yes, there were some mosquitoes. But the property is on the river and mosquitoes are part of the landscape there. A dislike of mosquitoes is a terrible reason to avoid La Casona del Rio; it is worth a few bug bites.

We found Trelew & Gaiman peaceful but a little uninspiring. Highlights for us were the abandoned Parque El Desafio in Gaiman, once the home & museum of eccentric Argentine artist Joaquin Alonso, and the Museo Paleontologico in Trelew. I would give the famous tea-houses a pass, unless you are really into tea for some reason.

We were looking forward to staying there from the pictures on the website. It really was nothing like that! There was no swimming - except in a mosquito infested, algae covered water tank- pumped river water. No horse riding, despite the advertisement, as they did not have insurance. It was dusty and hot and no grass -lots of bugs and mosquitos around. The rooms were sort of nice, but not worth the cost.It is too far from everything. You need a car absolutely. Peninsular Valdes is more than a day's journey. No atmosphere at the house. The food was basic -steak and salad and nothing much for non-meat eaters, and totally overpriced for the selection. My partner paid $US40 for a very cheap pasta dish! We paid more here for the food than anywhere else in Argentina- including good restaurants in Buenos Aires. Yes, the hosts were nice, why wouldn't they be at the prices they charge. The breakfast was good, but no different to lots of other similar places we stayed (that were less expensive) and we were in Argentina for over 6 weeks! We found a better place and price by far staying in Puerto Madryn overlooking the sea, with lots of lovely restaurants and walks. Much nearer to everything else.
So a 'rip off' beware.

This is the home where Norma was born. Full of lovely antiques and tresures.
Pretty far from Valdes Peninsula but the paleontological museum is outstanding. Memorable hike up 30,000 years in Geoparque Bryn Gwyn.
Had the worst meal of the trip at El Viejo Molino in Trelew.

We spent two nights in the Welch community of Trelew at the charming Casona del Río, an old Welch-style home that is now a bed-and-breakfast. We had two of the best dinners of our one month trip in Argentina at the Casona del Río. During and after dinner, we chatted (mostly in Spanish) for hours with the friendly family and other guests. We were welcomed as members of the family, and the whole experience was a real treat. The rural setting is very peaceful and quiet. It is a good location to stay when visiting the Punta Tombo Magellanic penguin reserve. It is outside of the town of Trelew, reachable by car or taxi. We walked back to the Casona del Río from Trelew one afternoon and it took about an hour.
