“Paradise in a unique landscape”
Reviewed March 21, 2013 via mobile

After one of the most beautiful drives we've ever done -- Rt 33 El Cerrito to Cachi, then rt. 40 south, we found and fell in love with Hacienda de Molinos. This piece of paradise -- quiet, classic and elegant -- is in the middle of nowhere. The silence in the courtyard made our day. Beautiful sitting room with fireplace; charming dining room; very comfortable bed in bedroom.

We stayed one night on route from Cachi to Cafayate. This historic hacienda is a wonderful oasis in the middle of nowhere. Molinos itself is a no horse town and the Hacienda is the only place of note. Our large traditional room was furnished with a sumptuous bed, beatiful antique furniture and an enormous modern bathroom. There is a splendid inner courtyard with a huge carob tree and tables and chairs.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with views over the river valley

We drove from Cafayate to Molinos - an incredible drive. It can be a little disconcerting arriving in some small towns in the middle of nowhere, but staying in Hacienda de Molinos (prior home to the last Governor of Salta appointed by the King of Spain) was perfect. On arrival we had some delicious empanadas in the courtyard under a huge pepper tree. Nice big rooms with big beds - no air-conditioning, however we found that you didn't need it and it was a nice change to have the window open (yes, there is fly-screen) with a fresh breeze blowing. We stayed two nights and ate in the restaurant both of them - atmosphere lacking (would be good to have some music perhaps?) but food was great - really delicious pork and beef. There is not much to Molinos - but most people, like us, use Hacienda de Molinos as a base to visit the Colome Winery (was good - not amazing, we were glad we weren't staying there & food was mediocre) & accompanying James Turrell museum (very good!).

Nice looking place built around 2 courtyards. Fairly basic rooms. No aircon. Breakfast OK. Dinner restaurant pretty bad... meat as tough as old boots! (Bad for Argentina!). This is a good stopover between Cafayate and Cachi. Don't spend more than a day here! Wifi not working when we were there. (seems like a common problem in Argentina's more out-of-the-way places.

After a hot, dusty but fantastic drive through the stunning scenery of northern Argentina we arrived at Molinos, a tiny but picturesque village about 5 hours drive south of Salta. The hacienda de Molinos was was an oasis of colonial charm and hospitality in a gorgeous old hacienda. The rooms faced out onto internal courtyards with deep verandahs, trees and gardens. Our room 9 was spacious, comfortable, and tastefully decorated with a lovely view over the surrounding countryside and mountains. The bed was super comfortable with crisp white luxurious bed linen and a good sized very clean bathroom. After a cold beer on the verandah relaxing in the late afternoon sun we retired to the huge rustic lounge room where an open fire had been lit to ward off the evening chill. Even though there were only 4 people at dinner the staff did a great job, serving up a very decent meal, (including vegetarian options) and offering a good selection of local wines. We were there in winter so didn't get to use the swimming pool, but it would be a great bonus in summer. Our only regret was that we could only stay one night.

The hotel itself was very beautiful and clean. We stayed there 1night. We Intended to stay two nights but realized quickly we couldn't use Molinos as a base. It is more of a stopover type of place. The views are great and the staff was nice. We were there in low season so we were the only people there, which made us feel a bit isolated. The beds were very comfortable and probably the best night of sleep I had the whole trip! Definitely recommend if you are passing through! Beautiful property!
