“A beautiful hotel”
Reviewed April 29, 2010

Beautiful boutique hotel that fits very nicely into the town. Lovely rooms in a lovely hotel especially the small suites at the end. No a/c but you can get a fan. Maybe a problem if there are mosquitoes though.

Only caveat if the morning breakfast rush. The staff only have one small drip coffee maker to make coffee for all the guests. No fault of the staff, just the management and owners.

A very nice small hotel about 5 minutes walk from the town square at Tilcara

The rooms at Las Terrazas are particularly interesting with much use of raw stone and wooden rafters. We had a superior room with a balcony - the views were not really good as even on the top floor of the hotel, you still overlooked the roofs of Tilcara.

They have a very good, small infinity edge pool. And we enjoyed a glass of wine and a dip here. The whole hotel, you can see from the name, is "terraced", and tumbles down the side of a hill. Good use has been made of a water feature, a pumped stream that wends its way through the hotel.

The manageress "Eileen Geoghegan" whose great grandfather came to Argentina, was particularly helpful. We met the owner, and he was very agreeable.

You could use either Tilcara or Purmamarca as a base for visiting the Quebradas and Salina Grandes. We chose Tilcara for 3 days, but could equally well have chosen Purmamarca. Tilcara has the extra of the fortress of Pucara, which you can walk to from the hotel

The one minus point we had here was that the road you had to walk to go into town for dinner was badly lit and (severely) potholed, and the pavements, where they existed were bad. Net result on a rainy night was that my wife fell over and badly hurt herself. The hotel does not offer a restaurant in the evening, but will arrange for you to have something in the hotel with a bit of notice. As we did not want to go out the evening after my wife's fall we asked the cold meat plate that the hotel offers - the waiter, whom I found particularly unhelpful, refused to make any changes to the platter (we had already had it on the first night, and had the fall on the second night)

I also had problems with the waiter when I wanted to buy a bottle of wine. He insisted in showing me the exhibition on wine in the foyer, but was unable/unwilling to show me the price list. Only the intervention of the manageress got him to print one out - I have no idea why they do not have a printed wine list on hand anyway! Basically when the manageress or the owner were not there, service deteriorated as the waiter appeared to be next in charge.

Breakfast was, as Argentine breakfasts are, a breakfast without being memorable. We managed to get the the "bad coffee in thermos problems" by getting the very helpful lady serving to do us fresh coffees from the espresso machine in their kitchen. Unless the hotel is full, which is was not when we were there, they should have been offering the fresh coffee to all guests.

With the exception of the waiter, all the other staff were lovely (amazing how one person can spoil your stay!). The hotel decor was outstanding. The pool although small was a little gem. We were left with the problem of eating in the hotel when we did not want to tackle the unlit, uneven streets, and I suspect that there may have been other solutions, but the waiter, our nemesis was not going to offer us anything.

The rooms at Las Terrazas are spacious and very well appointed, with walls of local stone and wooden rafters. The double beds are huge and very comfortable. The balconies give fantastic views of the village and the mountains across the valley.

There is secure parking, and although small, the pool is very refreshing (but chilly once the sun moves off it). Receptionist Eileen (English-speaking of Irish descent) was full of advice on local restaurants, and went to some trouble to obtain gluten-free food for breakfast. The rest of the staff are friendly and helpful - essential for getting heavy luggage down the steep steps from the rooms to reception.

Tilcara is an excellent stopping off point for visiting the Quebradas and salt flats - and the roads are surprisingly good.

Thoroughly recommended.

Tucked away above the town, Las Terrazas is a relaxing stylish boutique hotel. Using local stone and orginal Indian artifacts the building is amazing. The rooms are spacious with a balcony overlooking the town - the beds were very comfortable. The reception area is huge with an internal cactus garden and a water feature flows down alongside the stairs from the outdoor swimming pool on the top level. As it was still cool we did not use the pool but it would be a welcome relief in summer after a long day of sightseeing.

Federico on reception gave good advice on daytrips and restaurants in Tilcara and spoke excellent english. The hotel is a great base to explore the area - we did a daytrip to the Salt flats and Purmamarca. There is a secure parking area behind the hotel. It is only a 5 minute walk down into the town for shopping and eating.
Federico recommended El Patio for dinner and we were not disappointed in the excellent homemade food plus there was a local musical group performing who were really authentic with many different instruments - they were so good nearly all the diners bought a CD to take home to remind them of a wonderful evening.

We stayed for 2 nights and it was the most charming, rustic hotel we came across. It was a lovely retreat for a few days and a great base for going to Purmamarca and Salina Grandes and Humahuaca. There is also a nearby fortress/town called Pucara which is worth a visit. The hotel is away from all the other hotels but is lovely and peaceful. Pay for an upgrade as our view was of the tranquil town and the mountains. We also had a terrace which was great for taking pictures and chilling.
The down side to this hotel is that none of the staff speak English so communication was back to basics! The breakfast is not great but then you dont go to Tilcara for the breakfast. Tilcara is a quaint town that really makes you appreciate what you have.

We stayed at Las Terrazas for 3 nights and the hotel more than lived up to our expectations. We stayed in a superior room, for 280 pesos and the room was large, the bed was comfortable and the attention to detail was impeccable.

The hotel is just 2-3 blocks from the main square and was in a very peaceful and quiet location. It´s a beautiful place, the accommodation and public areas are clean and attractive and the pool looked lovely (we were out all day so didn´t get to use it). The staff all seemed to speak reasonable english and were extremely helpful with regards to trips (we had our own car), restaurants and things to do.

Just one minor negative point - the water was not that hot in the evening, but piping in the morning, so best to shower then!

The breakfast was great for a ´simple´ breakfast - fruit salad, yogurt, a wide range of home-made breads and home-made jams, coffee, tea and juice.

I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel or to stay there again.

  • Liked — Comfortable bed, free internet, good service, friendly staff
  • Disliked — lukewarm water in the evenings
