Initially, I thought the grounds looked pretty nice (by Mesa, AZ standards, anyhow). When I opened the door to my room, the smell hit me like Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Some potent mixture of an industrial disinfectant almost masking urine. The carpets immediately made me wish that I had not forgotten my shower shoes.
It appears that this hotel was probably quite nice 30 years ago, but has not had a maintenance since. The bathroom floor is sticky. The toilet seat does not fit the toilet, leaving a lot of porcelain protruding for your legs to rest on. The paint is cracked and the ceilings are stained. I do not even want to venture a guess as to what is hardened on to the coffee table. The mattress is adequate, though also probably older than me. I was honestly surprised NOT to find evidence of bed bugs. Perhaps they had better sense than me and chose not to stay.
Showering is awkward as the dilapidated Jacuzzi tub / shower (yuck!) is shaped for sitting.
The 2 star rating is generous and only handed out because it is still a far better room than the Howard Johnson I stayed at 2 years ago in Mesa.
I have to stay in Mesa once a year for work and my quest for a half way decent hotel in town is still ongoing.
