Having served four years in the Airforce in Lahr- Schwarzwald, I have been privy to some great gasthofs throughout Baden Wurtemberg and Bayern. Since our return to North America in 1994 it has been a constant challenge to find a German restaurant/gasthof of the same food quality and ambiance.
...and after wintering in Mesa this past winter we were fortunate to come across Zur Kate. Located In an inconspicious plaza located on Main St in Mesa, this is an extremely popular spot especially on weekends when they have a weekend special on every weekend for a phenomenal price. The special of note is the scweinhaxen (porkhocks) served with your choice of rotkraut (red cabbage) or sauerkraut, and the choice of bratkartoffel (German panfried potatoes) or spatzle. Point to note...lots of meat on one serving to feed two people. We made the mistake of ordering a dinner each and had enough meat left for the next two days for lunch. Other weekend specials include other German delights.
On weekends, there is an accordion player who plays German music, sooooo for those of us who have lived and experienced the German lifestyle and culture, if someone stands with a stein of bier or a glass of wine and starts to sing "Ein Prozit" don't look at them half cockeyed as a bunch of loudmouths...this is a German gathof in the closest form to what you will find in Germany, Similarly if a couple want to get up and dance...do so.
For weekend dining I recommend arriving early...no reservations taken and you can wait at the small bar or sit outside and wait to be called in. As a couple, if you are seated at a table for four why not invite another couple to sit with you (as in Germany)...a great way to meet others and share in the gemutlichkeit.
Can't wait to get back in December/January. Tschuss!!!
Other menu choices include various sausage meals and a variety of schnitzels done in the true German fashion with large abundant helpings.
