Usery Mountain charges $6 per car. They have a number of hikes of varying degrees of difficulty. We prefer the Wind Cave hike. It's easy to get to in Mesa. A lovely desert scenic park.

Wonderful place to experience a walk in the desert. Who knew there was such a variety of beautiful plants? Friendly, helpful Rangers assisted us in finding the perfect trail to hike.

Typical desert park. Great for walking...but a little far from any conveniances. Not best place in summer unless you have plenty extra water. And as so dry...you always need water.

Enjoyed a lovely hike/run up to the Wind Caves with a bunch of friends. It's a moderate to difficult trail with lots of large rocks but it's only a mile and a half up. Lovely views at the top. Downhill is fast.

This is one of my favorite places to visit in the Phoenix area. I go here often. The desert here is quite beautiful and the trails are well-maintained. A few suggestions from my experiences:

-If you're looking for a relatively short hike with nice views of the city, take the Wind Cave Trail. This is a great spot for some nice sunset views.
-It is possible to climb to the top of the mountain if you continue on the Wind Cave trail, but be prepared for a more treacherous and less clearly marked trail. It's far less traveled in that section, so probably not a great idea if you're hiking alone. The views from the top are really cool though.
-There is a large bee hive in the Wind Cave. It has been there for years and the bees don't seem to be aggressive if you're not bothering them. It's pretty impossible to avoid it if you want to visit the cave.
-If you're looking for solitude, a flat trail, and quiet (you can often hear gunshots from the nearby shooting range while hiking the Wind Cave trail), park at the walk in entrance off of McKellips road instead of taking the main entrance to the park.
-Bring more water than you think you need. This goes for any Arizona trail. The air is just very dry and it saps the moisture right out of you.
-I would not recommend hiking this trail in the summer. There is very little shade.
-There are beautiful wildflowers and cactus blooms in the park during April.
