“a dream in the jungle”
Reviewed January 8, 2012

We were here with our children of 8 and 10 y. The location was spectacular in the jungle. Nice staff. Accomodation as in a boutique hotel: everything is present and has the right atmosphere, although is isn't a 5*accomodation.
At first the children had a room across the hallway. But as soon as it was possible the staff changed them to a connected room.
There is quite a distance to the main road. For us that was not a problem, as we rented a car. The way from the airport to the hotel and the cataratas is really easy, so we think that is the most flexible thing to do.

La Cantera is aptly described as a Jungle Lodge. It is not close to town or even close to the main road and that to me was its main appeal. The main building/restaurant is surrounded by large wooden deck, an infinity pool and then the green walls of jungle beyond that. All the rooms are set off away from the main lodge. We were the first guests to stay in a pair of brand new rooms. Everything was clean and the adjoining deck featured a Jacuzzi. Drinking a few Quilmes in the Jacuzzi while listening to the jungle sounds in the dark after a long day of hiking the falls is something I highly recommend.

Getting to town (the staff can arrange a driver) is easy and about 10 minutes away. The Argentine side of the falls was about 30 minutes and the Brazilian side, 45 minutes. Each morning they provide a huge spread for breakfast (included in the price) and the staff was very helpful when it came to arranging our rides to the falls and our tickets for getting in/boat ride under the falls. The town has several good options for food/bars but the fair at the hotel is decent as well.

Wear bug spray when not in your room, this is the jungle after all. Other than that I highly recommend it.

We have had a very pleasent stay at the la cantera lodge. People are very helpfull and the location looks beautifull, even at night. The rooms are big and clean. You really need a taxi to get to puerto iguazu, but that will only cost you around $40,-. Oh, and the restaurant is really good too!

Beautiful and peaceful hotel in the jungle. Lovely pool, spacious, clean and comfortable rooms with thoughtful balconies (enclosed in wire mesh to keep the bugs out, with lounger chairs, a hammock for the rooms on the upper floor and a fan).

Service is fine - friendly but not particularly attentive or super helpful - and the food is very average. Ergo the four stars.

It's location in the jungle means it's not centrally located but that's part of the charm. Besides, it's a 5 minute taxi ride into Puerto Iguazu, which costs around 30 pesos (around $6) each way.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floor have hammocks and aren't a lot more expensive than rooms at ground leve...

We spent two nights at the lodge while visiting the Falls. I have to say I was a little leery about staying in the jungle due to insects (they love me!), but I never got one bite the entire time we were there. It was wonderful coming back to La Cantera after an exhausting day touring the falls. The grounds are well kept, the service was wonderful, the room quite comfortable, and the pool very relaxing. In fact, the ladies sweeping the grounds worked around the clock to be sure the jungle would not overtake the place. We did not have a car, so we decided to walk to the main road to take the local bus into El Centro and also to the Falls. It's about 1 1/4 miles over unpaved surface to the main road, and you pass Guarani Indians selling their crafts along the way. A nice feature for the Hotel to consider would be to provide a shuttle that runs at certain times to the main road. We ate both nights there, and the food and drink were first class and reasonable. One night there was even a Tango show.
The only negative was that we had prearranged for the hotel to pick us up from the Brazil airport, and our driver never came. After waiting over an hour, we wound up taking a taxi to the hotel, and the management was so sincerely apologetic. They really felt awful. They did make it up to us on the return trip.

Room Tip: All rooms have screened porches, but rooms on the second floor have hammocks on them. Nice touch!
