“Fantastic lodge near Iguazu Falls”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

My husband and I spent 3 nites at La Aldea Lodge with our 22 yr old niece. We were vacationing with her while she had a break from her Peace Corps duties in Paraguay. Our travel planner recommended La Aldea as a base for seeing Iguazu Falls. It was quite lovely; wonderful mix of "jungle lodge" and luxury, on beautiflul grounds. It rained quite a bit while we were there (winter) so didn't do as much exploring as we might of, but it was still beautiful. Rooms were fabulous; the dining room was also beautiful, with a fantastic full breakfast included with the room price. We only had dinner at the lodge once, since we also wanted to explore Puerto Iguazu a bit (a longish walk from the Lodge); and it was very good. Staff was very accommodating. Would definitely return, and recommend.

This hotel is an oasis of calm surrounded by rain forrest.
City centre is easily reachable by cheap taxi or bus. Walking is not recommended as there is not always a pavement.

All staff were very friendly and helpful.

We loved the breakfast, a good choice was offered.

One evening it was raining, so we had dinner at the hotel. We had a table outside which was romantic and the food was very good at a reasonable rate. I didn't like it inside due to the cold light (obviously energy-saving bulbs).

Our room was huge in size but to be honest a little refurbishment would be no fault. The mosquito nets were torn, some louvred blinds couldn't be open, the terrace door didn't close properly, the light switch next to the beds did not work and the air-conditioning didn't do what we wanted ;-) But that didn't bother us, we just noticed it.

In the night you can hear the nature, which was in the 1st night a bit scary (I was missing a lamp next to my bed!) as I heard strange noises but on the other side this was exactly what we liked at this hotel.... a piece of the wild!

The pool area is also lovely but could be maintained better. Pool was a bit dirty, especially the lowest one (the pool is steplike). The towels could be larger, but as there are enough available we always took 2 of them. There are a couple of sunbeds and actually too little no. of sun umbrellas but we didn't spend so much time there, so no point to complain.

The funny thing was that the pool lost color!! On the first evening my boyfriend noticed that my back was blue and my only explanation was the pool. 1 day later a lady with very white skin stayed in the pool for more than 1 hour and when she got out she was completely light blue all over her body, no idea what she did in the pool ;-) She looked like a smurf (without noticing it)!

Overall we would definitely again stay at La Aldea de La Selva Lodge. Sometimes some imperfect points make the whole perfect!

We stayed at this hotel for three nights as a comfortable base whilst we visited 'The Falls'. On our arrival into the impressive jungle themed lobby area we were greeted and checked in, in a timely friendly manner and a belboy was at hand to carry our bags and show us to the room/lodge. As we arrived under the cover of darkness, it was difficult to get an accurate impression of the hotel grounds on our walk (all rooms are outside of the main reception/restaurant area) apart from the fact I could hear that it was alive with wildlife and I immediately felt a great sense of adventure!! When we walked into our lodge, a damp smell hit me immediately and the bed felt slightly damp, but our belboy quickly turned on the heater/aircon unit for us (along with the TV, and he drew the blinds) and the damp disappeared in no time. Due to the rainforest setting and the fact it was a quiet time of year, I could accept the damp, particularly since it was rectified so quickly and after my initial concerns on arrival into the room, I was more than happy to be spending 3 nights here. As there is not much going on in Iguazu town (neither is it particularly desirable) we decided to eat in the hotel restaurant and we had some amazing food at a very reasonable price. Breakfast was also served in the lobby and was basic, but delicious (fruits, homemade cakes and bread, bacon, cold meats and scrambled eggs). After one, full, tiring and amazing day at the falls we decided to spend our 2nd day by the hotels lovely pool where we took advantage of the poolside service (which was quite a distance for the waitress, lobby - pool) and consumed many caiprinha's(the best I had on our whole 2 week trip in Brazil/Argentina) and some lunch. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff!!! We spent that afternoon/early evening on our jungle veranda (private and not overlooked) with a few drinks before heading off on the Iguassu Falls Moonlight tour which is highly reccomended if you are about on a full moon. Book this through the hotel and they will include transport to and from the hotel reception. We spent our last half a day between the pool and computers with free wifi they had available. Lovely hotel. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: We stayed in 'Puma'. Brilliant position!

To our dismay we only stayed here for one night... we wanted to book for longer, but the hotel was full and we had to move. But that one night was a marvellous experience! Upon arrival we were warmly greeted by the staff and escorted through the jungle path to our room, one of 4 in the jungle hut (ok, it's bigger than a hut and not made of bamboo, but it's cozy like a hut). The room was a good size, simply decorated, with the structure wood exposed. The large windows faced the lush green forest. The terrace brought you just a step closer to the smells and sounds of the jungle. That night was drenched in relentless rain. Heavy and loud, it felt a bit like we were camping, but in the comfort of our hut. In a half sleep the sound was so naturally soothing, (so no complaints about the noise).

The bed was very large by South American standards. The furniture fit the decor, but made out of bulky, heavy wood... in any case we didn't use the desk, didn't matter.

The bathroom sink was leaking as the faucet would not close properly. The shower curtain could be replaced by a glass door or something slightly more hygienic. This is a personal hotel peeve.

The dinner at the hotel was tasty, albeit a little heavy (I had fish which came with a side of creamed potatoes...). The breakfast was truly delicious: an array of fresh tropical fruit, cold cuts and cheese, sweet and savoury, everything you could think of.

We didn't have a chance to enjoy any of the spa services offered by the hotel, but we did go for a dip in the three tiered pool. Fantastic, especially on a humid day.

Booked via despegar.com we expected a 5 star hotel at a room rate of about 200 dollars per night. however, the rooms smelled very badly and appeared to be not more than a better youth hostel. At night, the room temperature went down to 10 degrees, even though the air conditioner was working all the time. It was impossible to change the hotel as the room rates for our stay were already charged and the hotel was not willing to return them.
As a much better hotel for only a little more money I can recommend the Loi suites, which is located directly next to the Aldea Lodge.

Dear Manuelvinke;
Thank you very much for having taken the time to send us a review. First of all we would like to express our sincere regrets for all the inconveniences you had to encounter during your last stay.
We have immediately and very carefully checked into all these issues, and confirmed there should have been no reason for all these incidents to occur.
I passed your comments to our Engineer, who has checked every aconditioner air in rooms, and has repaired.
Once again thank you for bringing all this to our attention.
Despite this negative comments, I hope that your stay in Iguazu was an enjoyable one.
