The Amerian is a new (opened in Fall of 2008), modern Hotel located at the very end of Ruta 12, where Brazil, Paraguay and Argentina all come together.

Iguazu was the second stop on our Honeymoon, and after the disaster that our original reservation at Hotel Cataratas turned out to be (see our review), we quickly hightailed it to this hotel and it single-handedly saved our Iguazu experience outside of the Falls.

As others have noted, the Concierge and Reception work hard to please, but most do not speak English extremely well – brush up on your Spanish or bring phrase book. It may take a couple times to get what you need, but they’ll keep working to please you.

The hotel itself has an excellent, open interior design with a beautiful, creatively designed pool area, but they don’t have the chemistry quite right yet (as of January 4th), as the water was pretty cloudy. This obviously was not detrimental to guest health, but it certainly wasn't the best aesthetically .

The rooms are normal in size, very clean and have private terraces. I would suggest paying extra for the river view, as it nets you a birds-eye view of the pool area as well. Plus, it's kind of cool to be able to see three countries from your hotel room (Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina).

All the rooms have modern furnishings, large LCD TV’s, EXCELLENT Air conditioning (very important for Iguazu in the summer), and comfortable beds. The bathrooms are also fully tiled, modern in appearance and rather large. A bidet seems to be in most higher-end hotels, and this was no exception.

The hotel has two restaurants, but one is really an all-you-can-eat Parilla (steak/meat house) that does not operate every day. The main restaurant (La Mision) has enthusiastic staff, but food is uninspired and while the quality is solid, it is certainly not the best. This might be attributed to growing pains of a new hotel restaurant, so I would be interested to see what it is like in another 6 Months to a year. However, the breakfast was the best of our entire South American trip and consisted of a massive buffet spread of hot and cold offerings, including tropical offerings like whole Kiwi (not slices, but a lopped open Kiwi with a small silver spoon stuck in it).

Due to the hotel being one of the farthest from the national park, it is typically more expensive to travel in between and Taxi drivers will try to sell you a ‘special’ package for round trip transportation at a cost of $100ARS-$120ARS. Instead, I recommend taking El Practico local bus service for $10ARS each person. Trip time is about 45 minutes and picks you up just outside the hotel. Exit the hotel to the left and walk roughly 100 Yards to the first intersection to pick up bus.

While the hotel is brand new, it is already showing signs of neglect – unfortunately, this seems to be an epidemic with Iguazu hotels in general. Unless curtailed early, I can see this hotel falling into the same neglectful state that Hotel Cataratas is currently in.

All in all, I would recommend the Amerian Portal del Iguazu as a solid choice in Iguazu for at least the remainder of 2009.

I got this hotel by recommendation of a travel agent. It was connected to a package with a trip to falls and airfare from BA. I had five choices but he told me this hotel was a high quaility 4 Star+ hotel. My problem with the hotel is that management is running this hotel with 100 percent profit margins. You will noticed this with the staff. They try but they are not properly trained and there is not enought staff. After five PM there is only one person at the desk that handles check-in, phone calls, and other misc issues. I found housekeeping staff very prompt and very work driven but I was not impressed by the restaurant staff. The staff is learning english so if you come to this hotel it would greatly to know Spanish or Spanglish(Broken Spanish). There are no Irons or Iron boards in the room. The pool is nice as well as the view and the breakfast buffett is okay if you arrive early before 7AM. This is a nice hotel but doesn't cut it in the area of customer service. They were doing some work in the hotel on the top floor which was annoying. THere is a small workout room with about 5 to 7 cardio machines. The staff does try but just not properly trainined in other languages and again they are short staffed. When I arrived, I got a fresh squezzed organge juice which was refreshing. Folks, Check your receipts, I got four different receipts, and they needed my credit card again. My main concirm with the receipt was that my full credit card number was on the fill. So, make sure you keep or destroy all of your bills that you get there.

We were put up for a night at this hotel when our plane developed mechanical problems. The hotel had some rooms that were still being finished, but there was no noise from that activity.

The hotel is deluxe and perhaps they have introductory pricing now, but the rates seemed very reasonable, the rates advertised on their website were about USD$120.00

Everything about the hotel was first class.

We were pleasantly surprised by the hotel. Rooms were spacious, by S.A. standards, ans staff was responsive and friendly. While not in town, the 15-minute-or-so walk into town was a pleasant. Don't be put off by the exterior; it's truly hideous architecturally. But the interior is modern and pleasant.

We hated this hotel. It has just been running for 3 months and it already looks completely run down. The staff is not properly trained and there is nothing special about the place with exception of the view that you get from the room.
