We were in Argentina for 3 months and went on many bodega tours while visiting. However, La fraccion was the only actual vineyard tour that we partook in and was by far the most enjoyable. The vineyard that the owners, Malcolm and Sue, have is not only beautiful it is very well maintained. By touring the vineyard you can really see the love they put into growing grapes and making amazing wine. Malcolm and Sue are both very knowledgable about what it takes to make a quality wine and are more than willing to answer any questions you may have.

Not only is the tour amazing but the wine is by far some of he best I have had. The tasting was amazing and during my time in San Rafael I enjoyed a lot of their wine.

Touring La Fraccion vineyard is truly and enjoyable and unique experience. So check it out you will really have a wonderful experience.

San Rafael is a great town to visit in Argentina--not too big nor too small. The people are very friendly and helpful (as is all of Argentina), and there are many attractions there to enjoy. Vineyards and bodegas are plentiful. A tour that is so worth the time is that of Malcolm and Sue Smith. Their finca is beautiful and shows tender, loving care. They are very knowledgeable of the process and have educated themselves about the product from start to finish. Their wine proves that. Malcolm takes his guests through the vineyard, explains the work that goes into producing top-quality grapes, patiently answers all questions asked, and takes as much time as you like, showing his love of the finca and his desire to produce the best. His place is immaculate! The wine-tasting at the end is superb! You won't be disappointed!

Not just is their wine excellent but you are getting a tour through the vineyard with the owner. Malcolm Smith has shown us around, explained vineyard management, pruning technics and in general how they achieve such excellent grapes for their very limited wines. The 2.5ha (about 6 acre) vineyard is superb kept and you can really get a feeling of what goes into the grapes.

Tours are by appointment only and only in English although you may get them in Spanish, I don't know.
We had the choice of ordering tapas as a lunch snack for a nominal fee. When everything is said and done...you were just super happy and we really enjoyed their Malbec. Bought a case of it and drank a bottle every day.

No other tour in San Rafael has impressed me as much. There is only so much looking at old barrels and stainless fermenting tanks you can do. At the end the wine is made on the vines.

On a visit to San Rafael in the Mendoza province of Argentina you will find lots of wineries that run tours to show you how the wine is made. They are interesting, but there is an option to take a step back and do this vineyard tour and learn how the grapes are grown.

There is a British couple, Malcolm and Sue Smith, who have been living in San Rafael for 6 years and they planted a vineyard on their 5 acre plot of land with a view to growing quality (rather than quantity) grapes and make their own wine. The vineyard is well established now and they are running informative tours to explain the methods they use to get the best grapes possible so they can make a high quality wine for local sales and export.

We received a warm and friendly welcome. The tour lasted about an hour as Malcolm walked us through their vineyard he explained everything very clearly and answered our questions with enthusiasm and he is obviously very knowledgeable about every aspect of growing grapes and about wine.

While we were doing the tour, Sue cooked lunch which is an optional extra. The food was fantastic and of course we got to taste their wines which are definitely some of the best wines we had during our time in San Rafael.

You do have to book the tour in advance either by email or phone. The tour is in English only and you should wear good solid footwear as you are walking through vines on uneven ground.

We were really pleased to have met Sue and Malcolm, they made us very welcome, fed us very well and taught us a lot about how grapes are grown. It's a great way to spend a morning or afternoon in San Rafael and from what we discovered it's the best place to eat too.
