Fantastic family-run B&B with great wine tours

5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 1, 2016
We stayed for 5 nights at Plaza Italia and really enjoyed our time there. It's centrally located, has a very smart downstairs/living room area, and clean simple rooms that are perfect for the price.

The breakfast is high quality and very nicely laid out. It's lighter than some UK/US visitors might be used to, but that doesn't matter because your lunches and dinners are typically enormous.

Best of all though, is your host Javier (and his lovely parents, who also live in the property). His personal recommendations for activities and restaurants were spot on, and he runs a fantastic wine tour that is worth every penny should you choose to take it.

Highly recommended.

I do not regularly stay in B&B's and maybe that was part of the problem. A friend recommended this place to me. I was traveling with my husband. The B&B's location was good. We were able to walk to many restaurants. For all of our tours we had to have drivers or take a taxi. There was an Argentina breakfast each day, not huge but enough to eat.

My room was located on the first floor. It was loud outside with the bus stop right next to my window and being on street level. Also, I was located next to the stairwell so it was loud inside too because of other guests entering and exiting. The bathroom was small but nice enough. I expected minimal toiletries, but didn't find any, so bring your own. The bathroom was also freezing.

Other people have mentioned the payment. They were not accepting credit cards when I was there either. We were given the option to pay in cash or online in a few days. The exchange rate was decent so we paid with cash. The rate was slightly different two days later when we checked out which was annoying but only a couple of dollars so I didn't complain.

I didn't find the common areas to be welcoming. When we sat on the couches and read before our taxi to the airport I feel a bit out of place.

Again, I have not stayed in many bed and breakfasts. I was not going to provide a review because I was not sure if I was comparing this place to a similarly priced hotel, which didn't seem fair. However, I have received several emails from the owners requesting a review on trip advisor - so here it is.

We spent four nights at this outstanding b&b, located in the heart of Mendoza. The location is perfect for walking around town and close to the great restaurants and the main pub street.

Mercedes, the lady of the house, has lots of great restaurant recommendations and will provide a good rundown of the city when you arrive.

Javier, Manager of the B&B took us on a fabulous wine tour to some of the smaller wine makers in Maipu and surrounds. He also helped us organise a car to tour the Uco Valley and set up tastings / provided directions. This really made the trip to Mendoza very good.

Rooms are clean and simple. The TVs are in need of a upgrade but it's a small detail in this well run place. The continental breakfast is very nice spread to wake up to.

B&B Plaza Italia is an adorable boutique place run by the family that have called it home for many years. The wife and husband live in several rooms towards the back of the house, accessible via the kitchen and office. That leads into the communal dining and living rooms, from where the individual rooms and stairs to the upstairs branch off.

The prices were very fair, and they organized airport pick-up and drop-off to make our logistics easier. The rooms were very simple but elegant and clean. The bathrooms were modern, though did not automatically have some of the amenities you come to expect like the miniature shampoos / soaps. They had a hairdryer at the front desk, but we had to ask about it, and I'm not sure how many they had if other guests had needed one as well. Our room was upstairs (the manager Javier's old room) and looked out onto the street and Plaza Italia. It was not noisy and several nights we slept with the window cracked in lieu of the AC / heating.

Breakfasts are not super hearty but they give you a lot of different options, fresh coffee and juice, etc. I do not recall if they offer a tea time or something similar, as we were generally out during the day our entire stay.

Javier and his mother run an excellent place, and I would recommend B&B Plaza Italia to anyone seeking to stay in the heart of Mendoza. It was readily accessible to the main street with bars & restaurants, as well as other pockets of nightlife, and the plaza itself is a charming, family-oriented park.

Room tip: Prefer upstairs to avoid noise from the street level

We were really disappointed with this place. The owners were lovely and the location is unbeatable. But the B&B itself is dark and many parts are overdue a renovation - the bathrooms in particular are very shabby. Breakfast is average.

One other thing - we booked through a travel website for a USD price, payable at the B&B. The owners were not accepting cards and charged us in local currency at an unfavourable exchange rate. This cost us probably an additional 30 USD in ATM fees etc. - not a huge amount but enough to leave a bad taste. Be careful of this...

Had a wonderful stay with Mercedes and Toto as they welcomed us in to their home! The location is great with it being central to all of the restaurants and park. Enjoyed the rooms and the at-home feel.

Room tip: Quiet floors; amazing natural light
