The statue of San Martin more than justifies the trip. It's not just him. there are donkeys, various scenes and even a condor on this grand monument. The views over the city are good too.

The Hill of Glory is where Mendoza meets the Andes foothills and is crowned by an extraordinary monument to Jose de San Martin and the Army of the Andes which left Mendoza and fought the Spanish in Chile and later Peru. The monument includes statutes and friezes which depict the entire campaign. We went there with an excellent guide who told us the whole story, using various parts of the monument to illustrate the story.

We were told by the Tourist Offce that we could catch red route 3, bus number 112 from the centre of Mendoza to the Cerro de la Gloria. This was not a pleasant experience, as the long wait meant that on arrival the bus was packed to capacity & then took us through some very doubtful areas. Then finally dropping us off at what turned out to be miles from the hill. Our lucky break of the day was that we managed to stop a taxi who drove us to the top of the hill. This was lucky in that he was the only taxi to pass by in over 20 minutes - thank goodness he was empty. Once at the top of the hill we arranged for the taxi to wait for us while we looked around, especially as the bus up there is only once every 2 hours and we certainly did not want to walk down. Our driver didn't have a long wait - what was the view? The vista was hidden by a vast layer of trees. Yes the enormous monument was impressive and we spent quite some time looking at and reading through all the detail. But all in all not worth our effort to go up there.

The Cerro de la Gloria is on a hill in the western sector of Parque San Martín, beyond the zoo. The monument tells the story of the Ejercito de los Andes (the Army of the Andes). Gen. San Martín spent three years in Mendoza to train and equip his force. Then they crossed the Andes (a huge accomplishment) and drove the Spanish armies out of Chile and Perú. The monument celebrates and shows the workers who prepared the equipment, the ladies of Mendoza who contributed jewelry to finance the effort, and the ordinary soldiers who bore the effort and the battles. This monument celebrates the work and sacrifice of all of the various patriots who contributed to the independence of southern South America. There is a kiosk selling snacks and water and bathrooms near the monument.

If you are going to the San Martin Park, there is a Van named VIP available at the tourist information center. They provide a park tour during one hour for 15 ARG pesos. The tour also includes the "Cerro de la Gloria". Do not pay for city tours and use this one, cheaper and better.
