“Enjoy it even more now”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

Even though this is a "newcomer" - it's NOT to be missed.
Our tasting gave us a LOT of history and insight. We were taken out by the tanks and sampled a few smaller blends.
Once we tasted the DOLCE we were sold - we had not tasted this before but LOVED IT!
They also bottle olive oil - GREAT!

“Special very authentic experience”
Reviewed June 13, 2013

The best Wine experience we have had including Napa/Sonoma, Chianti and Rhone. Felt like a very authentic family run Bodega, the people seemed genuinely happy to be there. Did not feel corporate at all(like Catena did). The tour of the bodega was educational from both a wine making and historic perspective. Never felt rushed and we were encouraged to ask questions. We were with a fun group of people which was even more fun once the tasting started. Tasting the Alta Finca Mira from the barrel was a highlight. We bought some wine and had it shipped home, which did take quite along time...but it was worth it. Doesn't hurt to have the Andes as your backdrop while drinking some the greatest Malbec in the world.

“The one to buy at....”
Reviewed June 10, 2013

My wife and I had only one day to spend in Mendoza wine tasting on our way from Buenos Aires to Santiago, so we hired a great private guide and let him choose our stops. Archaval Ferrer was the first one and we had a wonderful experience.

First off, we're glad we hired a guide. There are over a 1,000 wineries in the Mendoza area. This small one is located off a series of dirt roads (as most of the wineries in Mendoza are) with no signage that we noticed directing one to the winery until one is at their driveway. I was surprised since I think it commands one of the highest expert reviewer ratings for Argentinian wines.

The place seemed to be hopping when we got there - perhaps there were two or three other couples visiting, which is a lot for a small winery. Still, they make you feel comfortable and un-rushed as each couple had their own host who described the history and selection of wines, led your tour, and poured your wines.

In the States, we live only an hour from Napa. As we belong to several winery clubs, we go there about once a month and have fun sometimes tasting from the barrel. But this was the first time we had the chance to taste directly from several of the stainless steel fermenting tanks too, just for fun and educational value during the tour.

Archaval Ferrer has wines at several different price points (though none, unfortunately, are inexpensive). The single vineyard varietals command the highest prices, and they are rated well. For instance, the 2010 Finca Altamira was rated 96 points by Wine Spectator and 93 points by Wine Advocate last October. In contrast to other wineries, shipping back to the States is quite reasonable at $35 USD per case - a case in Argentina is six bottles, not twelve. Other wineries we visited charge around $175 USD per six bottle case. Our guide explained ahead of time to us that this winery charges so little because they batch visitors' purchases together to take advantage of bulk shipping pallets and rates. Therefore, it could take longer for you to get your shipment, but you will get it. In the interim, they communicate with you via email so you don't get worried. The other wineries ship any cases you buy separately and immediately, hence the huge difference in cost.

With the small shipping charge relative to the price of their top wines, we couldn't help but buy. At other Mendoza wineries we visited, the shipping charge was so high relative to the price of their wines that we only bought the couple of bottles that we were willing to pack in our suitcases. You can also re-order after you get home and get the same shipping rates.

If you are serious about tasting high end Malbec and think you may want to buy some to ship home, you'll want to check this one out.

“An 11 out of 10!!”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Of all of the winery tours we took while visiting the Mendoza wine country. Achaval Ferrer was our favorite. The tour was very personal and not rushed. We actually had a barrel tasting, which is not very common. This winery also has probably the best wines coming out of Argentina, One of the wines we tasted was rated in the Top 100 Wines of the World by Wine Spectator this year.
You will not be disappointed with the quality of the winery or the wines. The only problem was the amount of money we spent buying wines to ship home. I can't wait to revisit the wine when we get back.
