“Very poor zoo”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 29, 2013

This is one of the worst zoos we have ever visited and urgently needs updating with bigger and better enclosures. The jaguar, pumas, baboons, bears and and coatis were all in enclosures which were too small with just concrete and mesh. Some areas were better and the rheas, antelopes and zebras all had a lot of space. Needs a lot of investment to bring it up to 2013 standards

I visited this zoo last week. My boyfriend and I were disgusted with what we saw. Animals basically trapped in small concrete cages. Big beautiful animals kept in pens a fraction of the size they should be. Men women and children feeding the beers, monkeys, birds. The pathways for visitors are right beside some of the cages as such kids were able to stick there hands in to touch the animals. Not a sign of any member of staff To protect these animals if you ask me this zoo is practising animal cruelty not helping animals. Please don't support this money making machine.

“Very, very sad experience”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2012

The location of the zoo is pretty nice, on a hill overlooking the city, nice pathways, overall a good first impression. Some animals also have nice and spacious cages but the biggest and space loving animals are in a poor shape, in way too small cages, only able to walk in circles on concrete floors. All the bears tried to climb up the side walls, the polar bear had snow made out of white painted concrete to play with, the elephant stood on the sharp stones to reach over the ditch and grab food from people (yes, people were feeding the animals with all sorts of food, incl. chips....)

Also were most of the enclosures way too overpopulated, especially the deers, the monkeys (a lot of them had bite marks, some even escaped and sat in the surrounding trees) and the goats.

We left this place sad with an awful feeling, especially because they have so much empty space around all these animals, with a small rise in ticket prices they could improve so much!

Do these animals a favour and don't support this business!

“Poor excuse for a zoo”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2012

Ignore the tourism offices propaganda, this is a poor excise for a zoo and rivals bangkok for worst zoo exerience. Cramped and non stimulating enclosures. No water for animals such as the elephants and bears to wash in. Hippos rested in stagnate water with small concrete pen. You would think with all that wine money flowing the mendocinos would take some pride in their zoo
